Roseman University of Health Sciences, celebrating 20 years, is sponsoring a special symposium on the “Future of Medicine” featuring some of the best and brightest thinkers in healthcare and education. The program serves as a springboard for Roseman University’s plans to bring a private MD-granting medical school to Las Vegas and the beginning of Rosman’s celebration of 20 years.
The guest moderator and speakers will share their vision and passion regarding the transformation of academic medicine as it interfaces with population health, technology, policy, and practice. Top leaders in the Las Vegas community from all sectors of the economy are expected to attend and participate in an open dialog about the transformation of medicine. With two new medical schools in the Las Vegas in various stages in development (UNLV opened its doors in 2018 and Roseman University anticipates welcoming its first class in 2023), this program is especially timely and important to the health and well-being of our region.
The event will be moderated by Paul Umbach, the Founder and President of Tripp Umbach who was instrumental in the development of more than 15 new medical schools over the past 20 years, including the UNLV School of Medicine. Speakers, include Dr. Roberto Vargas from Charles R. Drew University in Los Angeles, who will present on the importance of understanding diversity in addressing Population Health, Dr. Doug Miller who will explore the intersection of medicine, advanced technology, and artificial intelligence, and Keynote speaker Dr. Pedro Greer, who will share lessons learned from starting a new medical school in Miami.

Dr. Vargas is a leading physician champion of quality health care and reducing health disparities. As a Principal Investigator on a National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) funded partnership in South Los Angeles, he Chairs the CDU/UCLA Cancer Center Partnership to Eliminate Cancer Health Disparities. Trained at the world-renowned Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center at the Harvard University School of Medicine while earning a Master’s degree in Public Health at the Harvard School Public Health. Dr. Vargas was chief resident at Yale Primary Care Internal Medicine Residency Program, after graduating from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. He is a national leader in strategies for increasing assess to care for minority populations.
Dr. Doug Miller

As one of the nation’s leading medical school deans, Dr. Doug Miller, is not only a great physician but a great educator of physicians with experience leading medical schools both the U. and in Canada. Miller served as dean at New York Medical College’s School of Medicine and Dean for the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta. He was a Robert G. Petersdorf Scholar-in-Residence at the Association of American Medical Colleges, a member of the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, chairing the accrediting body’s site surveys at the University of California, Riverside, Quinnipiac University’s Frank H. Netter M.D. School of Medicine and Penn State’s College of Medicine. He also oversaw the creation and 2010 opening of the Augusta University/University of Georgia Medical Partnership, a second four-year campus in Athens in cooperation with the University of Georgia. Dr. Miller is a leading authority at the intersection of medicine and technology through consulting relationships with IBM Watson and other leading technology companies.

Pedro “Joe” Greer Jr., MD, established the Department of Humanities, Health, and Society, at the Florida International University College of Medicine. Dr. Greer spearheaded a nationally and internationally recognized, interprofessional medical education program, Green Family Foundation Neighborhood Health Education Learning Program (NeighborhoodHELP™), which prepares future physicians to assess and address the social determinants that impact health outcomes. Dr. Greer established Camillus Health Concern and Saint John Bosco health care centers for underserved populations in Miami, Florida. He has published over 25 articles and book chapters on topics from hepatic and digestive disorders to policy, poverty, health, and medical education in the United States. Dr. Greer wrote Waking Up in America, an autobiographical account about his experiences, from providing care to homeless persons under bridges to advising U.S. Presidents George Bush Sr. and Bill Clinton. Dr. Greer serves in various capacities for national, state, and local organizations, including Trustee at the RAND Corporation and current Chair of the Pardee RAND Graduate School Board of Governors. Joe is a leading national and international healthcare visionary and among the most sought after speakers on the future of medicine.

Dr. Renee Coffman is President and Co-founder of the Nevada College of Pharmacy, now Roseman University of Health Sciences. She previously served as the University’s Executive Vice President for Quality Assurance and Intercampus Consistency and the Dean of its College of Pharmacy. Prior to establishing Roseman University, Dr. Coffman became a founding member of the faculty at Western University of Health Sciences, where she also held the position of Facilitative Officer for Student Services.
