With the “hands-on” involvement and participation of the principals and a deep-seated belief in teamwork, Clark & Sullivan Constructors has flourished in Nevada’s roller coaster-like construction market since the company’s founding in 1975. And, unlike a roller coaster, its fortunes have been rising steadily with no sign of a dip in sight. Clark & Sullivan’s primary focus has been on offering quality construction while maintaining the utmost in customer satisfaction, according to Chairman and CEO David W. Clark . The company is now one of Nevada’s top 10 general contractors and is well known throughout the region for cost savings and on-time project completion. For the past four years, Clark & Sullivan Constructors has been named as one of Engineering News-Record’s Top 400 Contractors in the nation.
Part of Clark & Sullivan’s success stems from the foresight of its founders, Clark and President B.J. Sullivan. Early in the company’s history, the founders, who both actively participate in the company’s day-to-day operations and business affairs, created an outside board of directors. The board consists of five community members with expertise in different fields. The input from these individuals enables corporate management to gain a different perspective and enhances the performance of the company, according to Clark.
As a way to maintain open communication, Clark & Sullivan also decided that using a team approach for every project was the ideal way to guide the complex construction process. At the beginning of every contract, the company sets up full-day pre-construction partnering sessions that establish communication guidelines and set the tone for team members throughout the life of the project.
Clark & Sullivan Constructors provides general contracting and design/build services throughout the western United States and is experienced in concrete, wood frame, masonry and structural steel applications. It currently holds contractors licenses in Nevada, California, Arizona, Oregon and Utah, with most of its projects completed in Nevada and California.
The company has participated in the growth of the West with projects for the healthcare, warehousing, retail, manufacturing, casino and hospitality industries, as well as office buildings, government buildings, schools, university buildings and parking structures. Some of its completed projects include: The Desert Inn Casino, Canyon Ranch Spa at the Venetian, Reno-Tahoe International Airport parking garage and baggage claim facility, Desert Pines High School and the Summerlin Medical Office Building. The company is currently constructing the UNLV Tonopah Hall Dormitory, the ESPN Zone at the New York New York Hotel and Casino, a spa shell at the Aladdin resort and casino and the renovation of the Caesars Centurion Tower Suites.
Clark & Sullivan was established in 1975 with an eight-person office in downtown Reno and in 1983, the firm moved to its current, larger location in nearby Sparks. In an effort to tap into the growing Southern Nevada construction market, the firm established an office in Las Vegas in 1994. The company now employs 100 people in its Nevada offices and has established a solid presence in both the private and public sectors.
According to Louis Primak, Clark & Sullivan’s Las Vegas operations manager, the company’s years of experience and excellent reputation have helped it enter into and succeed in the booming Las Vegas market. Since 1994, the firm has enjoyed an increase of 84 percent in volume, and Primak expects this trend to increase dramatically in the future.
Clark & Sullivan Constructors understands the need to give back to the community, and the founders donate their time and money to several charitable causes. As a company, Clark & Sullivan is involved with numerous community and charitable organizations, and has been a strong supporter of the arts. The partners also encourage employees to become involved in the communities in which they work.
Clark said his company’s goals are to continue to be an important part of the growing economy, while sustaining the firm’s growth rate. He said Clark & Sullivan aims to bring this about by consistently training its employees, hiring the best people, implementing gradual change and most importantly, providing exceptional service to clients, subcontractors and suppliers.
