Programs in environmental sciences, computer technology and manufacturing include bachelor’s, associates and certificates in some of the most-in-demand job industries to be classroom to career ready.
Las Vegas, NV – Starting this fall semester students will have even more opportunities at the College of Southern Nevada as the college is offering six new programs. Those programs include two Bachelor’s of Applied Science, one in Environmental Conservation and one in Environmental Lab Sciences, two associates of arts in Computer Science and in Cloud Systems Administration and two certificates of achievement, one in Advanced Manufacturing and one in Computer Science.
“These new programs are offered in some of the most in-demand industries. We hear from employers regularly that they need us to produce more workforce professionals and we are stepping up to meet the demands of our economy and workforce needs,” said Dr. Federico Zaragoza, CSN President.
Classes for the new programs accommodate flexible schedules to include mornings, afternoons, evenings and on-line to be adaptable for working students and students with other obligations.
Students who enroll in the two bachelor’s degree programs in applied science will have internship and field research opportunities. These programs join one other already established bachelor’s program, Environmental Management which has a 100 percent employment rate among recent graduates.
“Industries need workforce-ready graduates at the entry level, CSN’s programs do just this, creating workforce-ready graduates with the skills as a senior level technician who can hit the ground running with minimal post college training,” said Dr. Douglas Sims, Dean of the School of Science, Engineering and Mathematics at CSN. “Graduates from our already existing environmental science program all landed jobs straight out of graduation while our current students have participated in research projects both locally and internationally. Our students are truly phenomenal.”
Two of the new computer science programs are designed to transfer seamlessly to the University of Nevada Las Vegas via an articulation agreement so that students can complete their bachelor’s degree without losing credits. The Cloud Systems Administration Associates degree is partially funded by the National Science Foundation and provides students with access to industry professionals for advice and internship opportunities in the cloud system industry. This is in addition to hands-on instruction and certifications in cloud computing from organizations such as Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services and more. Students can also use their associates or certificates to step into entry-level positions in technology or in the cloud systems administration industry.
“Technology continues to be a growing field and we are excited to be offering more opportunities for our students to find a career in that sector. Whether it’s to go on to get a bachelor’s degree or jump straight into the workforce, our students will be best set-up for success with our programs,” said Naser Heravi, Chair of the Computer and Technology Department at CSN.
The advanced manufacturing certificate is an 18-month program that provides students with classroom and laboratory experiences in electricity, mechanical power, pneumatics, hydraulics and serves a growing employment sector.
