With the new school year underway, some parents are still trying to figure out what to do with their kids while they are at work. Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Nevada has a solution for this dilemma with both a Morning Program and After-School Program.
Boys & Girls Clubs provide fun, safe and supportive environments where kids and teens can make friends, build confidence, and develop critical life skills to become happy, healthy adults and reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens. The nonprofit organization serves youth ages 6-18 with 13 locations across Southern Nevada.
“Clubs are much more than childcare,” said Andy Bischel, president and CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Nevada. “Our extensive programming covers academics, healthy lifestyles, the arts, character and leadership-building, and even workforce development for teens. Everything starts with the safe, fun and inclusive environment that we provide. Once a youth feels safe, that’s when the learning can happen.”
He noted unsupervised afternoons between when school gets out and when parents get home from work are riskiest for kids and teens. “We turn this time of risk into a time of opportunity with some activity or interest for all ages. For example, an athlete can work on skills in the gym; a more academic youth can excel in our learning zone; and an artistic kid can take advantage of our art room.”
Clubs create experiences that invite kids to fall in love with learning, and provide programming designed to complement and reinforce what youth learn during the school day. As homework is a critical part of the learning process, there also is homework assistance including tutors and computer labs. Additional teen programming includes teen nights, college and career preparation, esports leagues and gaming, dance and cheer, arts and music, and the aforementioned workforce development.
Enrollment is available at all 13 Boys & Girls Clubs throughout Las Vegas, Henderson and North Las Vegas. Annual membership is required to attend, with memberships priced affordably at $35 for youth (ages 6-12) and just $20 for teens (ages 13-18).
For younger members, the Morning Program is $20 per week at select locations from 6:30 a.m. to 9 a.m., and the After-School Program is $40 per week at all locations from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. There is no charge for teens for either program with annual membership.
Financial aid is available for qualifying families. Each Club provides a meal to attending members during the After-School Program.
