Daniel Joseph Chenin, Ltd. is excited to announce that Fort 137, a custom residential project located within The Summit Club in Summerlin, has been recognized among the world’s best architecture and interior designs for 2022 by Architizer.
The annual Architizer A+Awards is the largest international awards program focused on promoting and celebrating the year’s best design across a wide range of disciplines and project categories. Each year, thousands of entries from over 80 countries are reviewed by a panel of internationally respected architecture and design leaders. The jury selects five finalists in each category, designating one as the Jury Award winner. Finalists are then open for public voting to determine the Popular Choice Award recipient.
“It was an incredible honor to be recognized as a finalist. The caliber of design and competition is extremely high. Seeing our work up against some of the best in the world, including architects and designers that I have looked up to throughout my career, is a great feeling.” says firm Principal and namesake Daniel Chenin. “Our entire team is so passionate about design and the work we do. Each element of every project is thoughtful and precise. To have that effort be recognized at this level with both a Jury Award and Popular Choice Award is extraordinary, and I couldn’t be prouder of our team.”
Constructed in 2021, Fort 137 represents the firm’s unique approach that integrates architecture, landscape design, interior design, furnishings, and accessories – including procurement and styling. Daniel Joseph Chenin, Ltd. applies the same process and rigor used in the design of hospitality spaces for the world’s most iconic luxury resorts to a range of project types and sizes including private residences, commercial offices, and more. “Our design is experiential; it is about the way each space makes you feel. The sounds and smells. The way light and shadows move through a room, subtly changing depending on the season or time of day.” Daniel proclaims.
Forté Specialty Contractors served as the General Contractor and worked closely with the design team at Daniel Joseph Chenin, Ltd. to bring the award-winning design to life. “This house is like a Swiss watch. Every detail affects something else. Daniel’s drawings and instructions were incredibly precise. Some of his dimension requirements were to 1/32 of an inch, and that’s unheard of in our industry.” says Travis West, project director for Forté Specialty Contractors.
Fort 137 was selected as the Jury Award winner in the Private House XL category for all residential projects over 6,000 sq ft and as the Popular Choice winner in the Residential Interiors category for projects over 3,000 sq ft in the 10th Annual Architizer A+Awards program.
The A+Awards are just the latest in a string of accolades garnered by the project which include an American Institute of Architects (AIA) Citation Award in the “Built – Residential” category in 2021 and a 2018 AIA Merit Award in the “Unbuilt Design” category from the AIA Nevada Chapter, as well as the 2021 Silver Nugget Award for “Best Outdoor Living Space – Custom Home” by the Southern Nevada Home Builders Association. Fort 137 is also the subject of the newest book in the Masterpiece Series by Oscar Riera Ojeda Publishers which will be available in bookstores, online world-wide later this year and through the firm’s website.
About the Project
Fort 137 is located along the fringes of the Las Vegas Valley in Nevada with unobstructed views of the Red Rock Canyon Conservation Area to its northwest and Spring Mountain along the southwest. Fort 137 is an environmentally conscious home comprised of a series of connected rock masses emerging from the earth.
Organized into three layers which radiate from a communal nucleus, each volume was carefully placed to maximize views of the surrounding untouched land, while controlling the harsh effects of the sun, wind, and light. The building pays homage to the old fort structures found on the fringe in the early settlement days of Las Vegas, which relied upon site-sourced materials and tried-and-true techniques of building in an arid climate.
Panoramic glass doors on the north and south facades extend the living space beyond the architectural perimeter while providing cross-ventilation and daylighting, along with expansive views. Deep, louvered roof overhangs help minimize heat gain by providing shade during summer months while allowing natural light to permeate and the space during the winter.
The residence is comprised of carefully chosen native and regionally sourced, robust, no maintenance, and long lifecycle building materials that will compliment and evolve with the site as they age and patina over time including weathering steel, hot rolled steel, reconstituted wood, site sourced rocks and native vegetation.
