(LAS VEGAS) NurseMuse has been developed as new way of learning and designing nursing care plans for nursing students. This study tool helps create care plans and provides resources and questions to test your knowledge. Students can practice NCLEX-type questions, learn how to read cardiac strips, and learn food and medication interactions, just to name a few.
Dr. Catherine Prato-Lefkowitz spent three years developing the software to help nurses. As a nurse educator, she noticed that students were still struggling, just like she did many years ago when she attended nursing school.
“They told me that it would all come together at the end of the training, but I wanted to build a platform that gave them the road map first and the tool to keep all the materials in one place,” said Prato. “I remember in the old days we had at least five study pocketbooks, notes were everywhere, and it was hard to keep up with all the new information that is coming at you daily. I thought there must be a better way to keep all of this information organized and in one place. I looked for what was out there for students today, and I could not find anything specific for nursing students. So, I decided to create it myself. I am passionate about teaching nursing and helping students become nurses.”
NurseMuse allows students to develop clinical judgment, enhance safe decision-making, describe how medical diagnoses relate to nursing diagnoses, create nursing diagnoses based on clinical data, choose appropriate nursing interventions to promote positive patient outcomes, and explain rationales and logic behind nursing care plans to guide clinical decisions.
Nursing schools can integrate NurseMuse into their curriculum to keep students engaged and interactive before, during, and after clinical rotations. Or students can sign up for the tool as induvial users to assist them with their personal studies.
Dr. Catherine Prato-Lefkowitz, Ph.D., MSN, RN, CNE, earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology and Nursing at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) in 2001 and her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2002. Upon graduating from the UNLV BSN Program, she was invited back by a faculty member to teach a Fundamentals Laboratory course to first-semester nursing students, where she found her passion for teaching. Dr, Prato-Lefkowitz then pursued a Master of Nursing in Education to learn the principles and theory of teaching, as well as pursuing a Family Nurse Practitioner Degree to expand her nursing assessment and diagnostic skills. After graduating with a dual Master of Nursing degree, she completed her terminal degree with a Ph.D. in Nursing Education from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Dr. Prato recently graduated with an Executive Master of Business Administration from UNLV.
