Saint Mary’s Adds Rehab Unit
Saint Mary’s has announced the addition of an inpatient acute rehabilitation unit (ARU). The unit is expected to open in 2023 and will be located in the existing hospital. The ARU will add 14 beds and include private rooms and recreational and therapy spaces.
Nevada College Receives “First-Gen Forward” Designation
The Center for First-Generation Student Success has recognized Nevada State College (NSC) as a “First-Gen Forward” cohort. As part of the designation, the school will receive professional development, community-building experiences and a first look at the center’s research and resources. NSC was recognized for its commitment to first-generation students and the school’s initiatives geared toward helping them develop in college.
UAS Test Site Transitioning to UNR
The University of Nevada, Reno has launched a new program, Nevada Autonomous, to manage and enhance Nevada’s Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Test Site activities. The Test Site was created following Nevada’s designation by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as one of seven states to serve as a center for the development and testing of unmanned autonomous vehicles and system. In addition, UNR and Sierra Nevada Corporation have been named one of four teams selected for NASA’s University Leadership Initiative. The initiative supports NASA’s aeronautical research goals.
West Henderson Hospital Breaks Ground
Valley Health System held a ceremonial groundbreaking last month for West Henderson Hospital, the systems seventh acute care hospital in southern Nevada. The 150-bed facility will be on the southwest corner of Raiders Pkwy. and St. Rose Pkwy, near the Las Vegas Raider’s headquarters. The $385 million, 40-acre medical campus will include a 37-bay emergency department and is expected to open mid2024. SR Construction is the general contractor for the project.
RTC Southern Nevada Received Over $7 Million in Federal Funding
The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC) will receive over $7 million in federal funding to advance safety and sustainable mobility options. The money was awarded through the Federal Transit Administration’s (FTA) Buses and Bus Facilities Program and the Consolidated Appropriates Act of 2022. The RTC will use the funds to purchase hydrogen fuel cell buses, add solar lighting at bus stops and expand the bike share program.
Nevada Gold Mines Donates to Support Schools
Nevada Gold Mines, a joint venture between Barrick (61.5 percent) and Newmont (38.5 percent) mining companies, has donated $320,000 to Communities in Schools Nevada (CIS). The organization is the fifth largest state office of CIS nationwide and provides evidence-based dropout prevention with affiliate offices in Clark, Elko, Humboldt and Washoe County school districts. Nevada Gold Mines has contributed over $3.3 million to the nonprofit over the past 12 years.
Henderson Police Department Opens Lateral Recruitment
The City of Henderson Police Department (HPD) is now hiring current police officers from local and out-of-state agencies during its lateral recruitment period. The hiring period is open through April 14. Lateral recruitment allows HPD to fill open positions with qualified and trained police officers. Last September the department received 79 lateral applications during a similar open recruitment period.
GOED Approves Workforce Development Grant
The Nevada Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) approved a $400,000 grant from Workforce Innovations for the New Nevada (WINN) fund to grow a commercial driver’s license (CDL) training program at Western Nevada College (WNC). “Our in-demand occupation analysis shows that Nevada is 4,509 jobs below the national average in licensed commercial drivers,” said Stacey Bostwick, GOED Director of Workforce Development. “This program in Carson City will create 100 training slots for jobs with an average starting wage of $24 per hour and begin to address the deficit in an area of critical workforce development need.” The Nevada Trucking Association estimates that about 92 percent of manufactured goods in Nevada are transported via trucks. A recent report from the American Trucking Association estimated a shortage of 80,000 commercial drivers which may grow to a shortage of 170,000 drivers.
Santa Rosa-Paradise Priority Landscape Restoration Project Receives Investment
The Nevada Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and the U.S. Forest Service Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest are investing almost $200,000 this year to the Santa Rosa-Paradise Priority Landscape Restoration Project. The agencies will collaborate with agricultural producers and forest landowners to invest in conservation and restoration efforts in Humboldt County.
