Faith Lutheran Middle School & High School’s award-winning Conservatory of the Fine Arts invites the public to “go exploring” with Coraline, Nov. 4 through Nov. 7, in the school’s 772-seat performing arts center and chapel space.
Faith Lutheran’s Head of Theatrical Arts Erik Ball adapted the show from the popular 2009 movie. Faith Lutheran’s dance teacher and choreographer Christian Escobar is the show’s director.
The production, which introduces original concepts and eye-catching puppetry, tells the story of Coraline, a curious girl who a secret door in her new home. Behind the door lies an alternate world that seems like a much improved version of her own. Coraline rejoices in her discovery, until her Other Mother and parallel family try to keep her forever.
To save her family, Coraline must use all her resources and bravery and come to the ultimate realization that she’s not the center of the universe.
Other shows in The Conservatory’s season include “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” (Dec. 3 to Dec. 5), “Mamma Mia” (Jan. 21 to Jan. 30). “The Wizard of Oz” (Feb. 25 to Feb. 27); “Celebrate the Arts” (March 5); and “The Phantom of the Opera” (April 29 to May 8.)
“We are thrilled to be back together, rehearsing and preparing to perform at full capacity again,” Escobar said.
Faith Lutheran’s Conservatory program, launched in 2014, includes majors in instrumental music, vocal music, dance, visual arts, theater performance and technical theater. Class offerings include ballroom dancing, costume design, sculpture, musical theater, and photography. Students can perform in multiple bands, choirs, dance teams, concerts, plays, musicals and the end-of-the-year conservatory showcase.
“These shows and artistic programs let our students expand their minds, work as a team and manage the tension of performing in front of live audiences, all skills that will help them later in life,” Faith Lutheran Fine Arts Dean Emily Slater said. “In their way, these shows all explore lessons about the human condition, which helps cast and crew members develop empathy and compassion.”
Faith’s conservatory program has produced several Nevada High School Theater Spotlight Award winners, including Grace Parker (2018); Jackson Langford (2015); and Brooke Solan (2014).
