LAS VEGAS – Western Elite, one of Southern Nevada’s largest waste haulers and recyclers, announced today that it is expanding its partnership with the City of Las Vegas to increase the recycling of biosolid materials to turn them into compostable materials.
Nutrient-rich and organic, biosolids, also referred to as “sludge,” are a result of wastewater treatment processes. Recycling these materials allows them to be used for soil amendment to improve and maintain productive soils and stimulate plant growth. Prior to the new agreement with City of Las Vegas, Western Elite was collecting an average of 280 tons per week. They are now collecting an average of 480 tons per week.
“In increasing our recycling of biosolid materials, we are supporting a more sustainable community with reusable resources, helping to eliminate and divert landfill waste which is incredibly important to us here at Western Elite,” said company Vice President Scott Seastrand. “We are pleased that the City of Las Vegas has partnered with us to grow this effort as we all step up to help our environment.”
Western Elite began the collection, storage and recycling of biosolid materials nearly two years ago. Since launching this eco-friendly initiative, 27,000 tons of biosolid materials and approximately 100,000 tons of green waste that was mixed with the sludge for composting have been diverted from ending up in a landfill and can now be used for agricultural, gardening and landscaping purposes.
