RENO, Nev. — Spooner Backcountry offers 50 miles of hiking, equestrian and mountain biking trail. Now, after more than 35 years, the visitors center will be getting a facelift to reflect the beautiful Lake Tahoe Basin scenery. The project broke ground Monday on the new visitors center and amphitheater with Reno-based Group West Construction overseeing the construction.
“We are thrilled to be a part of such an exciting project that will bring new life to Spooner Lake,” said Jeremme McGilvray, V.P. Director of Operations Group West Construction. “The heavy timber visitor center is beautifully designed, and I can’t imagine a better setting for an outdoor amphitheater. As a local company we value projects that will benefit our community.”
The $3 million renovation began in June and is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2022.
Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park says the new facilities will offer visitors high-quality interpretive programming and environmental education and will serve as a base for natural and cultural history programs, ranger-led hikes and tours, and an outdoor science venue for students.
The project is part of the Lake Tahoe Environmental Improvement Program and is a public-private collaboration between the Nevada Division of State Parks, the Nevada Division of State Lands, the Nevada Tahoe Resource Team, the Washoe Tribe, and the Tahoe Fund. It is made possible by public bond funds, the Land and Water Conservation Fund, the Nevada Lake Tahoe License Plate Program, as well as the generous donations made through the Tahoe Fund by individuals and foundations who want to help ensure a sustainable Lake Tahoe for future generations.
