PUCN Approves NV Energy’s Greenlink Nevada Initiative
The Public Utilities Commission of Nevada (PUCN) has approved NV Energy’s proposed Greenlink Nevada transmission and renewable energy initiative. The initiative will tap into renewable energy zones throughout western and northern Nevada to accelerate the development of clean energy on public lands and increase electric reliability for the state. NV Energy has invested over $2.5 billion into Greenlink Nevada which is expected to generate $690 million in economic activity and support nearly 4,000 jobs.
UNR Launches Doctorate for Natural Resources and Environmental Science
The University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) has launched a doctoral degree program in natural resources and environmental science through the school’s College of Agriculture, Biotechnology and Natural Resources. The Ph.D. program is intended to prepare students to address critical regional and global needs in applied natural resource ecology and management as well as in the field of environmental science.
Nevada State Bank’s Annual Survey Reports Anticipated Economic Recovery
The eighth annual Small Business Survey released by Nevada State Bank revealed an expectation of a faster-than-average economic recovery. According the survey of small business owners and managers, the economy was the number one concern for the first time in eight years. Additionally, just over 70 percent of respondents applied for a Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan.
Robocall Report Reveals Nevada is Among Most Affected
A recent report from WhistleOut, an online cell phone and internet data compilation organization, revealed that Nevada is the sixth worst state for robocalls. In the 2020 fiscal year, Nevadans were estimated to have been robocalled over 525 million times. The average American received around 12 robocalls per month last year. Data from “Do Not Call” complaints registered by the Federal Trade Commission and the estimated number of robocalls made per capita around the company was used to determine the estimates.
Resale Home Prices in Las Vegas Accelerated in 2020
SalesTraq released their annual Las Vegas Price Appreciation map which showed that overall price appreciation rates in the resale market accelerated last year. The median price in the resale home market was up by 9 percent while transactions were down nearly 7 percent. In the final month of the year, the median resale value hit $313,000 across all product types, an increase of nearly 12 precent from the same month in 2019.
CSN Seeks Mentors for Scholarship Recipients
The College of Southern Nevada (CSN) is seeking mentors for an influx of Nevada Promise Scholarship students. The scholarship recipients can attend a community college in Nevada virtually tuition free once they’ve met the requisite conditions, including meeting with a mentor. Mentoring is done over the phone and the time commitment is approximately three to five hours per semester.
Nevada Credit Union League Data Shows Record Savings
Recently released data from the Nevada Credit Union League (NCUL) shows deposits have increased in the 15 locally headquartered Nevada credit unions by 24 percent and hit a record in the fourth quarter of 2020. In addition, there was an overall 10 percent increase in loans including a 14 percent increase in first mortgages and a 62 percent increase in business loans.
UNR College of Business Launches Sports Management Program
The University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) College of Business has launched a sports management program to address a growing interest in the subject in Nevada. The program includes an undergraduate Sports Management minor as well as an online, nine-month Executive Certificate in Sports Management. The certificate is geared toward sports industry professionals to gain relevant knowledge about the industry.
UNLV Launches Career-Prep Digital Marketing Bootcamp
The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) and HackerU have partnered to launch an accelerated professional bootcamp to prepare individuals for a career in digital marketing. It is a noncredit program taught by industry experts and focuses on building skills employers are looking for in marketing candidates. The program will prepare learners using real-world, simulation-based exercises as well as exposure to marketing platforms and team-building projects.
