Online, competency-based university will award five students with $5,000 scholarships
LAS VEGAS/RENO – WGU Nevada, a state affiliate of Western Governors University (WGU), announced today that it will award five new students with $5,000 scholarships to celebrate its 5th anniversary. The nonprofit, online university that launched in 2015 as part of former Gov. Brian Sandoval’s initiative to advance critical sectors in building Nevada’s economy, has grown to the largest private, nonprofit university in Nevada based on full-time enrollment.
The state-endorsed university, which officially launched June 16, 2015, currently has 3,300 active students, and has achieved several other milestones in its first five years, including:
Conferring more than 4,000 degrees
Awarding almost $500,000 in scholarship funding to 238 Nevadans
Enrolling students in all 17 of Nevada’s counties
“As we reflect back at our accomplishments from the previous five years, we are proud of what we have accomplished,” said WGU Regional Vice President Rick Benbow “We look forward to continuing to create opportunities for Nevadans who have the desire to further their education or career.”
The WGU Nevada 5th Anniversary Scholarship is valued at up to $5,000 per student and is open to new students in any of the more than 60 bachelor’s and master’s degree programs offered at WGU, including programs in business, information technology, education, and health professions. Students can now apply for the scholarship through October 15, 2020.
The scholarships will be applied at the rate of $1,250 per six-month term, renewable for up to four six-month terms. Multiple scholarships will be awarded through a competitive program. Scholarships will be granted based on a candidate’s academic record, financial need, readiness for online study, current competency, and other considerations.
WGU pioneered competency-based education, which measures learning rather than time spent in class. This allows working adults to earn career-enhancing degrees while meeting work and family obligations. Students complete their programs by studying on schedules that fit their lives, advancing as soon as they demonstrated that they have mastered course materials. Many students can apply prior learning and work experience to help them accelerate their time to degree, saving both time and money.
