LAS VEGAS –In Fall 2019 Nevada State Bank President & CEO Terry Shirey committed to chair the Southern Nevada JDRF 2020 One Walk®. Over the past six months, many things have changed, but Shirey’s commitment to the JDRF One Walk did not waiver. In fact, Nevada State Bank is now also the presenting sponsor of the 2020 JDRF One Walk Las Vegas The Las Vegas walk will be held on November 1st virtually, in coordination with hundreds of other JDRF Chapters and their communities across the country.
JDRF is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research, and the JDRF One Walk is the largest and most powerful peer-to-peer fundraising program in the world for T1D. Since 1992, the event has raised more than $1 billion for T1D research. This funding has enabled research on how to prevent, delay and ultimately cure T1D. It has led to life-changing drugs, treatments and devices, many of which have already moved into clinical trials and real-world testing.
“We can’t let COVID-19 derail such important research. It is my honor to serve as the Corporate Chair of the 2020 JDRF One Walk®, Las Vegas. As the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research, JDRF’s mission is to cure, prevent and treat T1D and its complications. But they can’t do it alone,” said Shirey. “I have stepped up to support JDRF and engage my company to support their mission of helping people with T1D, including some of my wonderful colleagues who are impacted by this disease. I’ve learned a great deal about the impact type 1 diabetes has on children and families, as well as the great work done by JDRF in not only making life better for those afflicted, but also in making great progress toward a cure.”
The 2020 JDRF One Walk will take place virtually on Nov. 1 and participants can register through the JDRF Nevada chapter. There are two virtual walks in the state, one each for Northern and Southern Nevada: One Walk, Las Vegas and One Walk, Reno. Nevada State Bank is hosting a team in both regions, and NSB colleagues will join together to champion JDRF’s mission to fund critical research that can lead to scientific breakthroughs and ultimately a cure for type 1 diabetes.
“JDRF One Walk is an opportunity for our community to join together to champion JDRF’s mission to fund critical research that can lead to scientific breakthroughs and ultimately a cure for type 1 diabetes,” said Celia Wheeler, Market Director for JDRF. “We look forward to working with Terry Shirey and are so grateful to Nevada State Bank for their support of the type 1 diabetes community during this time of uncertainty. Though things will look different this year as we gather virtually, we can be certain of this: the T1D community is stronger than ever.”
In addition to signing on as the presenting sponsor of the Las Vegas walk, Nevada Bank is the gold-level sponsor of the 2020 JDRF One Walk in Reno, Nev.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone that enables people to get energy from food. It occurs when the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, called beta cells. While its causes are not yet entirely understood, scientists believe that both genetic factors and environmental triggers are involved. Its onset has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle. There is nothing you can do to prevent T1D, and—at present—nothing you can do to get rid of it.
JDRF is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes research. Our mission is to accelerate life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent and treat T1D and its complications. To accomplish this, JDRF has invested more than $2.2 billion in research funding since our inception. We are an organization built on a grassroots model of people connecting in their local communities, collaborating regionally for efficiency and broader fundraising impact, and uniting on a national stage to pool resources, passion, and energy. We collaborate with academic institutions, policymakers, and corporate and industry partners to develop and deliver a pipeline of innovative therapies to people living with T1D. Our staff and volunteers throughout the United States and our six international affiliates are dedicated to advocacy, community engagement and our vision of a world without T1D.
