Moves are being scheduled for four families who need to relocate from their current residence because of COVID-19-related circumstances. The families are the inaugural recipients of Moving Our Community, the program developed by Move 4 Less to help people struggling to pay their mortgage or rent transition to a better location or financial position. Avi Cohen and Moti Perez, co-owners of the local moving company, are paying for the moving costs.
Program recipients are Jula Dorsa, Sasha Rojo, Tyria Smith and Pam Wilson, whose applications to Move 4 Less were reviewed by a committee of Cohen, Perez and other company managers and staff. Smith’s family has already been relocated, and the other local moves are expected later this month and in August.
“This move is a blessing for us, being able to go to a new place where my mom now has her own room instead of sleeping in her chair,” said Smith. “We are so grateful to Move 4 Less.” Smith cares for her mother, who has mental illness, as well as her daughter and grandson. Due to a mix-up, they didn’t have adequate space at their previous apartment. Smith has health issues, both making the moving process difficult for her to do by herself and making her at risk for COVID-19 and unable to get enough hours and work in her food service industry position.
“We were overwhelmed by the compelling stories families shared with us and about the pandemic’s effects and complications on them, and are grateful to be able to help,” said Cohen and Perez. “Moving Our Community is a meaningful way for us to give back to our community that has supported us for so many years. We’re also proud of our team for supporting Moving Our Community and our other community initiatives.”
The recipients’ applications detailed their hardships and needs related to job loss or less work hours, reduced income, health and housing issues and complications, public assistance for food and/or shelter, and family considerations. Another example is illustrative. A new baby exacerbated the situation for Rojo and her fiancé ‒ a waitress and bartender, respectively ‒ because of reducing working hours surrounding the birth, maternity leave and subsequent job loss. This was compounded by their condo owner wanting to sell the unit, forcing them into an unexpected relocation when their funds were already low and having to seek interim shelter assistance.
“The recipient applications painted a picture of the real effects of COVID-19, making me want to do even more for them,” said Eyrick Gibson, Move 4 Less general sales manager, who is also helping a family find temporary housing options and assisting with other obstacles the recipients are dealing with, where applicable. “Moving Our Community and our efforts makes me feel even more proud to work at Move 4 Less, and more grateful for the blessings in my own life.”
Upon being chosen by Move 4 Less, Rojo shared that it moved her to tears. “It lifted my spirit and gave me faith knowing that the little people do matter, as opposed to slipping between the cracks,” she said, summarizing the feeling of all the recipients. “Move 4 Less’ help means the world to us.”
