LAS VEGAS – Southwest Medical Associates will donate meals to Catholic Charities’ “Meals on Wheels” program to feed homebound seniors in Las Vegas and North Las Vegas over the next few months. As part of the Facebook Live virtual concert series, “Healthy at Home,” one meal per live view will be donated, up to $5,000 per concert, to Meals on Wheels.
The medical group hosted the first Facebook Live concert to kick off the “Healthy at Home” virtual concert series to entertain the community while observing social distancing practices. The first virtual concert featured the original musical stylings of local singer-songwriter Shawn Eiferman.
Southwest Medical Associates committed to donating one meal to the program for every concert view.
Catholic Charities, which oversees the Meals on Wheels program in Southern Nevada, is the only local organization with a program that delivers meals directly to homebound seniors. Meals on Wheels delivers a set of seven nutritionally balanced, frozen meals to about 2,300 clients every week throughout the year. Nevada ranks among the top states in the nation with the highest rates of hunger risk among the senior population.
This effort joins Southwest Medical Associates’ ongoing work and larger commitment to the community and food security. In early April, the campus cafeteria for Health Plan of Nevada, Southwest Medical Associates and OptumCare was re-purposed to prepare bagged meals, and the effort is ongoing. About 1,500 meals are being distributed Monday through Thursday by the city of Las Vegas and Clark County to those in need.
