LAS VEGAS – Immunize Nevada, Nevada’s only statewide nonprofit dedicated to immunizations with offices in Reno and Las Vegas, recently recognized Nina Anderson, an AmeriCorps member who was chosen as a finalist for the Governor’s Points of Light award. Nina works with Immunize Nevada’s Las Vegas team.
The Governor’s Points of Light award program celebrates the extraordinary efforts of volunteer Nevadans. It is the highest honor bestowed by the state of Nevada and Nevada Volunteers, the commission that selects and administers Nevada’s AmeriCorps programs.
Anderson’s time spent working with Immunize Nevada includes working closely with the Southern Nevada Health District’s Sexual Health Clinic, where she helps educate patients about Hepatitis A and the importance of vaccines. She also partners with the Clark County Library District to provide educational presentations and immunization record searches for individuals and families at various libraries across the Las Vegas Valley.
“Nina is an excellent example of what a national service member should be. She exhibits empathy and positivity for those of who need it most in the Southern Nevada community,” said Carol Luna, program manager for Immunize Nevada’s AmeriCorps Program. “Each day Nina manages to reach out to the community with a smile and a cheerful attitude. Immunizations can be a challenging topic of discussion, and yet she understands how important the need is and demonstrates the patience and dedication to do so.”
Nina attended the University of Nevada, Reno, where she earned a degree in biology, worked in the microbiology lab and was a teaching assistant for the university’s microbiology lab classes. During her time as a teaching assistant, she was introduced to the field of epidemiology, which sparked her passion for public health. After graduation, she went to work for Myriad Genetics, a genetic screening laboratory in San Francisco. In 2018, Anderson began to pursue a master’s degree in public health at the University of San Francisco and is currently completing her final semester online while serving as an AmeriCorps member.
