Collaboration to Bring Books to Affordable Housing Properties Throughout Rural Nevada
Carson City, Nev. – Nevada Rural Housing Authority (NRHA) and United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra (UWNNS) have partnered for the “At Home With Reading” Book Drive, benefitting the residents of NRHA’s northern Nevada affordable housing properties. The drive will take place now through October 31, and books will be delivered early November to the NRHA communities, which house low-income residents, many of whom are veterans, disabled, seniors, and/or formerly homeless.
“Research shows children experiencing inadequate housing achieve significantly lower levels in reading and have less access to books,” said UWNNS CEO Michael Brazier. “We also know that children living in households where books are abundant achieve better academic performances later in life.”
The book drive is part of NRHA’s National Housing America Month activities in October and will help grow the little libraries at each of the housing authority’s affordable properties. Access to books is just one of the resources NRHA aims to provide its residents and their guests.
“While our missions read differently, at our cores, the housing authority and United Way do the same thing,” said NRHA Executive Director Bill Brewer. “We are here to improve lives, and whether that’s through housing or literacy, we’re proud to be able to come together and make a difference.”
The NRHA properties that will receive book donations are:
– Indigo Village in Fallon
– Larios Arms in Winnemucca
– Mountain Shadows in Elko
– Pinion Apartments in Elko
– Richards Crossing in Carson City
– Southgate in Carson City
– Southwood in Yerington
– Winnemucca Manor in Winnemucca
– Yerington Manor in Yerington
The northern Nevada community can help by donating books or the cost of new books. New or gently used books for all ages can be delivered to 3695 Desatoya Dr. in Carson City or 639 Isbell Rd. #460 in Reno. You can donate the cost of new books online at uwnns.org/Books.
