COURTYARD BY MARRIOTT RENO HOTEL REVEALS MASSIVE 10FT PAINTING BY NEW YORK ARTIST AND PRINCETON GRADUATE AT GRAND REOPENING
ELISE RISE (b. 1993), Two Story City, oil on canvas, 72 x 120 in., Painted in 2019.; Rise in her studio painting Two Story City
Elise Rise is a New York City based artist from Richmond, VA. After graduating from Princeton University with a B.A. in Art History and Visual Arts, Rise went on to work at Christie’s auction house in New York City, spending time in the Contemporary Art, Estates and Appraisals, and the Rare Books Department. After receiving significant attention from colleagues, clients, and press for her submissions to the annual staff show, Rise left Christie’s to dedicate herself to her art practice. Since leaving Christie’s in 2018 Rise has exhibited across the United States and internationally. The above painting, Two Story City (2019), at an enormous ten by six feet represents the largest painting in Rise’s oeuvre and was acquired by the Courtyard by Marriot Reno for its new lobby space in time for its grand reopening.
Rise’s artwork explores the relationship between bodies and contemporary objects using an art historical lens. By layering historical art processes or content with digital, campy, and contemporary interventions Rise seeks to expose the power dynamics between bodies and objects. Rise chaotically layers digital and analog editing on top of each other via a process in which she photographs her unfinished work, digitally edits these photographs, marks on top of print-outs of the same image and then uses the most successful elements from these marked up digital print-outs as a guide for finishing the original work. In this way digital re-alteration is a crucial part of the process yet the work remains an entirely hand painted original.
Inspired by her time in Reno, Nevada, Elise Rise sought to create a painting which captures the unique culture and vibrant aura of the city. In Reno, Rise discovered a city with an ability to bridge multiple identities and to join its past with the present. Indeed, this fusing of identities is woven into the fabric of the city as it is written into its iconic motto, “…the biggest little city in the world”.
In her monumental colorful interior, Two Story City, Rise explores the city’s endemic duality; its ability to maintain the identity of both historical and futuristic, and to bridge the divide between a cultural metropolis and natural oasis. To capture this dynamic, Rise merges two different aesthetic styles. She uses blurred strokes of paint and colorful triangular geometric forms for the figures and staircase in a style evocative of early 20th century Italian futurist paintings alongside a more traditional realist style and natural motifs, found in the deer head, stone wall, mountains, and balcony. The effect is of a fleeting present and an awareness that ‘the now’ is temporary while history is immutable. Rise uses the city’s flair for melding disparate forces and identities as a schema for addressing opposing forces in the artist’s life. With the silhouetted figure poised in the doorway, Rise explores the dual existence of seeking the spotlight alongside the simultaneous desire to remain a distanced observer.
