LAS VEGAS – Goodwill Industries of Southern Nevada, Inc. (Goodwill) celebrated the end of another successful year of its Student Work Experience Program (SWEP) today with a special ceremony at the East Las Vegas Community Center located at 250 N. Eastern Avenue in Las Vegas. Beth Fisher graciously hosted the event and it was a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of the SWEP students and their teachers.
The goal of Goodwill’s Student Work Experience Program is to provide special needs students with work experience in a real business environment and an opportunity to gain valuable job readiness skills. Students volunteer once a week at various Goodwill stores for one to two hours under teacher supervision. The SWEP students assist with a variety of retail and inventory processing tasks depending on each student’s individual skill level. Goodwill’s Student Work Experience Program provides volunteer opportunities to special needs students in 36 high schools in the Clark County School District. The 2018-2019 school year was the most successful year yet with 504 student participants and 163 teachers.
“Goodwill is very proud to provide work readiness experiences to special needs students of the Clark County School District,” said John Helderman, Goodwill’s CEO. “Goodwill’s SWEP program shows students how to work as a team and develop some of the workplace skills they will need to support themselves in the future. ”
