Henderson Chamber volunteers to visit two high schools this spring
HENDERSON, Nev. – The Henderson Chamber of Commerce will host its 11th annual Integrating Career Academies by Networking Business and Education (I CAN BE) program, a one-day event geared to help freshmen at two local high schools better plan for their future and achieve their goals.
The program will visit two Henderson-area high schools this spring. It will run from 7:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. on Thursday, March 7 at Foothill High School, 800 College Drive and from 7:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Friday, March 29 at Green Valley High School, 460 N. Arroyo Grande Blvd.
In connection with the event, an essay contest, sponsored by the Arnold Lopez Scholarship Fund, will award one student from each school. Awards will be given once essays have been submitted and judged after the event. Arnold Lopez, who died in 2017, was the creator of the I CAN BE program.
The event is free for students, who will learn which high school courses best suit their long-term, professional goals. Chamber members from the business community will volunteer their time to speak and mentor approximately 800 participants during each event.
Volunteers will be split into 16 areas of career interest including agriculture, food and natural resources; architecture and construction; arts, a/v technology and communications; business management and administration; education and training; finance; government and public administration; health science; hospitality and tourism; human services; information technology; law, public safety, corrections and security; manufacturing; marketing; science, technology, engineering and mathematics; and transportation, distribution and logistics.
Three to four volunteers will lead each group to give students one-on-one attention and mentorship.
“This program has been a staple of the Henderson Chamber’s spring schedule for more than a decade, and it’s one of the highlights of our year,” said Scott Muelrath, president and CEO of the Henderson Chamber of Commerce. “Our members get to speak face-to-face with students who, in a few short years, will hopefully be active, engaged members of our business community. It’s an exciting time.”
Local professionals can show their support by mentoring students during the event. To download a volunteer form visit here.
