As national Domestic Violence Awareness Month comes to an end, one of America’s most iconic landmarks will glow purple in honor of efforts to raise awareness about this common crime.
Hoover Dam will be transformed in an exceptional display from 6 to 10 p.m. Monday, October 29. With approval from the Bureau of Reclamation, The Production Resource Group of Las Vegas will facilitate the transformation using purple gels. The 726.4-foot-tall dam will shine purple from the foundation rock at the mighty Colorado River, to the crest of the Dam.
Community-based advocacy programs across Nevada will unite for this unique show of strength including SafeNest, S.A.F.E. House, The Rape Crisis Center, Safe Embrace, Tu Casa Latina, Domestic Violence Resource Center, Winnemucca Domestic Violence Services, The Shade Tree, and the statewide Nevada Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual Violence will join other agencies across the state in celebration of this event.
“We hope this recognition will bring attention and spark new discussion about domestic violence in Nevada and nationwide,” Sue Meuschke, NCEDSV executive director.
Nevada Domestic Violence Statistics
The Nevada Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual Violence compiles statistics quarterly from numbers supplied by advocacy programs throughout Nevada. These numbers translate into lives directly affected. In 2017, Nevada advocacy organizations received 64,457 contacts and calls for assistance. There were 108,642 referrals for Nevada services such as housing, legal help, food, and more. The statistics are provided by NCEDSV which provides support, information, and training for advocacy programs across the state.
According to the Violence Policy Center, Nevada is ranked #3 in the nation for domestic violence-related homicides.
The event is open to the public, and the community is encouraged to show their support in honor of survivors who struggle daily with abuse and individuals who died as a result of domestic and sexual violence.
