Elko – During the month of June, the Safety Consultation and Training Section (SCATS) of the State of Nevada’s Division of Industrial Relations is offering a wide range of free Workplace Safety and Health Training Courses in Elko. The course offerings include Workplace Violence Awareness, Electrical Hazards, Self-Inspections: 12 Weeks to a Safer Workplace, Hazard Communications Awareness, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 30-Hour Construction Outreach Program.
“We are excited to offer a number of important safety courses in Elko during the month of June,” said Todd Schultz, Chief Administrative Officer for SCATS. “SCATS offers a wide range of training programs and materials on OSHA regulations and Nevada safety and health statutes, all at no charge, throughout the year and throughout Nevada.”
The Elko-based trainer for the courses is Debra Carroll, Consultant/Safety Trainer for SCATS.
Carroll has lived in Elko since 1999 and has overseen construction practices in transportation, mining, residential, industrial, power, and solid and hazardous waste industries. Since 1987, she has been a Quality Assurance Technician for large heavy civil construction projects. Additionally, Carroll has worked in certified laboratories, established field laboratories and testing programs, and performed testing for soil classification and density, trained intern engineers, and served as onsite safety coordinator for 30 years.

WORKPLACE VIOLENCE AWARENESS
Date: Thursday, June 7, 2018
Time: 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Location: 1405 Idaho Street, Sherman Station Conference Room, Elko
This class offers a comprehensive overview of violent behavior in the workplace. Participants are introduced to the dimensions of violence and aggression and the precursors to workplace violence. Regulatory measures and OSHA’s commitment to combating violence in the workplace are discussed. The class includes individual and group participant activities. Discussions also focus on: categories of violent behavior, fundamental concepts of physical security, and a systems approach to target hardening and prevention – reduction strategies.
ELECTRICAL HAZARDS
Date: June 7, 2018
Time: 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Location: 1405 Idaho Street, Sherman Station Conference Room, Elko
The program provides an awareness of the general hazards of electricity in the workplace. This is accomplished through a review of the basic physical characteristics of electricity, an overview of electrical safety, how to identify common electrical hazards, and some methods to control them.
SELF-INSPECTIONS: 12 WEEKS TO A SAFER WORKPLACE

Time: 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Location: 1405 Idaho Street, Sherman Station Conference Room, Elko
A guide for safety personnel to help set up self-inspection programs. The program gives ideas on how to do self-inspections and how to identify for hazards. It sets up a timetable for looking at different common hazards found in almost every workplace, and how to account for each hazard found.
HAZARD COMMUNICATION AWARENESS

Time: 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Location: 1405 Idaho Street, Sherman Station Conference Room, Elko
The presentation provides an overview of the written hazard communication requirements. Topics covered include: labeling, inventory, material safety data sheets, and training.
OSHA 30 HOUR CONSTRUCTION OUTREACH PROGRAM
Date: Monday, June 25, 2018 – Friday, June 29, 2018 – Must attend all five days.
Time: 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Location: Great Basin College, 1500 College Parkway, High Tech Cnt. Rm. 111, Elko
This five-day course provides training in OSHA’s Construction Standards, 29 CFR 1926. It is an expanded version of the ten-hour course. Attendees must attend all five days to receive the OSHA attendance card.
