Reno – RE/MAX Realty Affiliates (RRA) agent, Sam Olson, team lead of The Olson Group, created a new scholarship this April for Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) students who are interested in studying business. The Olson Group Business Scholarship is available for a full- or part-time TMCC student who has a 3.0 GPA or higher, is enrolled in business classes and has demonstrated financial need. The scholarship will be awarded to a student prior to the start of the Fall 2018 semester.
The Olson Group Business Scholarship will fund up to two classes per semester for a TMCC student, which Olson hopes can help take some of the financial pressure off of a student studying business or pursuing their real estate certificate.
“It’s important for students to have access to the funds they need to get started in business or to advance their careers and become better at their profession,” said Sam Olson, RE/MAX Realty Affiliates. “I’d like this scholarship to help students who want to grow their knowledge base and be able to contribute to our city’s work force.”
Currently 93 percent of TMCC students are Nev. residents and 67 percent of TMCC students who receive financial aid, which includes scholarships, are from low-income households. By local business leaders contributing to scholarships, like the Olson Group Business Scholarship, they are investing in our community’s future workforce and assisting Nev. students in achieving higher education degrees.
“It is important for all businesses to support the local community,” said Rebecca Josten, Scholarship Manager at TMCC. “Many of our students here at TMCC are investing back into our community once they graduate, so when a business invests in the college, they are really investing in the community.”
Students are encouraged to apply for scholarships through TMCC’s Financial Aid, Scholarships and Student Employment Office. The normal application period for scholarships at TMCC is open from January 1 through March 1 of each year.
“I’m really excited to give back to a community that’s been good to me and hopefully with this scholarship we can help to educate more people in business to meet the workforce needs of the future in our area,” said Olson.
