LEGACY
The first and longest running program of its kind in Nevada, Healthcare Heroes was born in 2006 with 10 categories and a seemingly endless supply of nominees. Since the beginning, Healthcare Heroes has been a catalyst to help grow healthcare in the Silver State.
Taking the idea of contributing to healthcare a step further, the Healthcare Heroes scholarship fund was created. With scholarships set up at the University of Nevada, Reno and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, the funds are set aside for those students seeking careers as healthcare educators.
With around 250 Healthcare Heroes honored and tens of thousands of dollars donated to Nevada schools, it’s safe to say that Healthcare Heroes is and continues to be a success.
Over the years, Healthcare Heroes has had several distinguished members of Nevada’s medical industry serve as judges for the event. This year’s judges had the same unenviable dilemma as judges of previous years: determining this year’s class of Healthcare Heroes.
Judging starts with a nomination form that is sent out at the beginning of the year. After nominations close, judges on both ends of the state are asked to consider each nominee carefully and decide who should be honored as a Healthcare Hero. It’s no easy task and nominees go through an extensive vetting process prior to selection.
The Healthcare Heroes team extends a huge “thank you!” to everyone that has helped this event succeed, especially our corporate sponsor Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, the associate sponsors, the 2017 judges and all of the Healthcare Heroes participants and event attendees.

She worked tirelessly with leaders at Renown to help find a solution and now serves as a registered nurse and the director of group practice operations at Renown Medical Group – Tonopah. Using TeleHealth technology, Jessica is able to remotely connect with physicians in Renown’s network across Northern Nevada.
Jessica’s passion to provide quality healthcare is evident in her approach to her patients and the genuine concern she shows. Healthcare in a rural town can look a little different than one might expect. Through his dedicated efforts, Dr. Boman has made groundbreaking medical advancements in Southern Nevada, including the creation of the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) program, a lifesaving program and the first of its kind in the region. Dr. Boman recognized the mortality rate for people who suffer cardiac arrests in hotels, casinos or other crowded buildings could be greatly reduced by making portable AEDs available to the staff and training employees on how to use them. He worked to implement this program throughout Southern Nevada.
While providing out-of-the-box solutions to medical needs, Dr. Boman approaches patient care with compassion and empathy. Through collaboration with faculty and staff, Dr. Ruchala continues to make improvements that benefit both the school and the Northern Nevada community.
One of the biggest challenges in healthcare is the shortage of qualified nurses in clinical practice and education. Nevada has the lowest registered nurse-to-population ratio in the nation. As such, the nursing shortage is critical for the Silver State. Under Dr. Ruchala’s leadership, Orvis School of Nursing has expanded its educational offerings to include additional degrees and certificate programs that address some of today’s most pressing patient care needs such as adult gerontology and psychiatric-mental health.
As a reflection of Dr. Ruchala’s efforts to address the community’s nursing shortage, the National Council Licensure Examination passage rate for Orvis School of Nursing students has risen by more than 30 percent since her involvement. Last year saw a 93 percent passing rate. Orvis also continues to see a rise in applications to the school, making the process much more competitive.
Last year, Dr. Ruchala began the Mae Orvis Health Care Symposium, an annual community engagement and learning opportunity for nurses in the region. The vision of the symposium is to encourage best practice ideas that facilitate a strong interdisciplinary healthcare team and provide best outcomes for Nevada’s patient populations.

Prior to this position, Gina served as a registered nurse at Spring Valley Hospital and Sunrise Medical Center.
After ending her shift one afternoon earlier this year, Gina was on her way to pick up her daughter. While at a red light, just a couple of miles from the hospital, she noticed a car pulled over with a family frantically pulling an unresponsive toddler from the backseat. Gina’s emergency response instincts and medical training kicked in as she jumped into action.
With a Henderson police officer already on the scene and an ambulance on its way, she quickly approached the desperate family. She could see the little boy was choking and realized time was of the essence to restore his breathing. Gina was able to perform the Heimlich maneuver on the toddler, a different move for children than for adults. To everyone’s relief, the little boy expelled what was blocking his airway and began breathing again. Soon after, the ambulance arrived and transported the toddler and his family to the emergency room.
Because of Gina’s instincts and immediate response in such a critical situation, the life of a child was saved. If the definition of a hero is a person who is admired for courage, outstanding achievements and noble qualities, Gina Marsh is certainly deserving of the title. Though Gina’s nature is to humbly understate this incredible deed, the family will forever be grateful for her action that afternoon.

Late last year, Liga started a clean water project for the outlying areas around El Fuerte, Mexico. Most of the small communities there get their water from shallow wells or directly from the river, neither of which are clean due to general sanitation and agricultural practices in the area. Lonnie has been instrumental in constructing and installing modified slow sand filters in individual homes and local schools to remove biological contamination from the water. In addition, she has presented regionally and nationally on the subject of assisted living and government relations.
In 2016, Wendy developed and launched Veterans in Care (VIC), an initiative that has not been done by any other state and builds on Nevada’s commitment to be the most veteran-friendly state in the nation. The goal of the initiative is to connect veterans to benefits and programs, educate care providers on veterans’ specific needs and to recognize veterans for their service. VIC has allowed NDVS to recognize hundreds of veterans throughout the state, all while sharing valuable information on health and wellness programs available to them.
In her efforts to connect with veterans living in Nevada and ensure they get the resources needed for their care, Wendy and her team have found countless veterans not enrolled in the VA medical system or receiving any benefits. Her overall goal is to make sure they take advantage of the benefits available to them and let them know they are not forgotten. As the VIC program expands, she anticipates reaching an additional 3,000 veterans, including those receiving care through hospice, home health, personal care agencies, adult day care centers and many other community partners.
In addition to the VIC program, construction on the new Northern Nevada State Veterans Home is underway to serve eligible military veterans and their families.

She was recruited by University Medical Center (UMC) in 1991 to develop the hospital’s pediatric intensive care unit (ICU) which, at the time, was a small six-bed unit.
As the hospital’s only critical care physician in pediatrics, she covered the pediatric ICU on her own until 1993, never leaving the city during that time. Knowing she was the only physician in this critical field, the cost of leaving could mean the life of a child. While others may have crumbled under this immense pressure, Dr. Vohra took on the responsibility and focused her efforts on implementing changes that would make pediatric critical care more accessible.
With a tireless work ethic and unwavering dedication to accomplishing this goal, Dr. Vohra transformed UMC’s undersized pediatric department into a full-scale hospital offering the highest level of care to children. She is recognized as one of the primary advocates behind the development of Children’s Hospital of Nevada at UMC, the state’s only associate member hospital of the Children’s Hospital Association, a national non-profit organization.
Dr. Vohra has made significant and lasting impacts on Southern Nevada’s pediatric care, fighting every step of the way to provide local children with high-quality, specialized care. As a result of her efforts, the hospital now provides children with direct access to a comprehensive range of pediatric subspecialties such as pulmonology, pediatric surgery, neurology, cardiology, gastroenterology and many more.

He lets his patients know he is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, even taking calls on his personal phone to ensure his patients receive the best care he can possibly give. “Fighting cancer is hard work for patients,” Dr. Perez explained. “Having to travel hours to a larger city to get the treatment you need is not the best option for many people. We try to make it easier on them.”
Dr. Perez’ accolades and training span four continents, three specialties and several decades. He attended medical school in Colombia, completed internships and residencies in general surgery, internal medicine and pathology in England and the University of Pennsylvania and received fellowship training in oncology and hematology at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Texas.
Dr. Perez is admired by both his patients and colleagues for his dedication and drive to deliver exceptional medical care. As a board-certified oncologist and hematologist, he continues to bring the latest cancer treatments and quality healthcare to communities across Northern Nevada.

In 1994, Ed started with Carson Tahoe Hospital as the chief operations officer and, in 2001, moved into the role of president and CEO, the position he still holds today.
With years of experience in hospital management, Ed had a strong vision for the Carson Tahoe hospital facility and its health system. He heard the needs of the community, but knew the cost of expanding services was beyond what the county could afford. Because the healthcare needs in the region were so great, the county suggested the hospital change to a private, not-for-profit organization. It took about a year for these changes to take place and for the hospital to buy the land for a new campus. From there, Ed led the development of the open-heart surgery program, acquiring Sierra Surgery Hospital and the opening of urgent care and clinic locations.
Ed also spearheaded and established an affiliation with the University of Utah Healthcare and the Huntsman Cancer Center. These partnerships allows Carson Tahoe Health access to the resources and clinical expertise from top ranked academic medical centers. Now Ed and his team are able to offer patients improved and expanded services such as complex cardiovascular care, clinical trials and advanced cancer treatments. Through Ed’s strategic perspective and capable leadership, Carson Tahoe Health has become an invaluable resource to the community and continues to serve Northern Nevada’s healthcare needs.

Roseman University offers five academic degree programs in pharmacy, nursing, dental medicine and the business of healthcare to address the needs of our communities. In 2013, Roseman established an MD-granting College of Medicine, which is currently working to achieve accreditation.
When Roseman University was established, its founders approached learning in a different way. They recognized that every student has a different learning style and that adult learners may need to be engaged differently. They also believed that every student could succeed and compete at a very high level if given the right tools and training. Breaking down barriers and increasing communication and partnership between student and teacher are at the core of success, proficiency and content mastery. Student-to-student collaboration develops healthcare professionals that work in teams so that patients have the very best chance of good outcomes.
The university developed the Six-Point Master Learning Model to produce graduates that are competent and to provide an educational environment that, not only produces and ensures high levels of achievement from all students, but also fosters cooperation and collaboration in the learning process. The Six-Point Master Learning Model consists of block curriculum, active and collaborative learning, competency-based education, assessment learning, early experiential learning, and a classroom design that facilitates learning. All of these components reinforce one another, and contribute to an unparalleled educational environment.
Roseman University has campuses in Henderson and Summerlin as well as the Salt Lake City suburb of South Jordan, Utah. The university is regionally accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.

Services encompass three acute care hospitals including a children’s hospital and children’s ER, a rehabilitation hospital, skilled nursing, extensive medical group and urgent care network, telehealth in nearly 30 communities and Nevada’s only locally owned, not-for-profit insurance company, Hometown Health.
For more than 150 years, Renown has taken care of the community it calls home. A nationally recognized healthcare leader, Renown is continually growing, broadening services, improving upon the care it provides, seeking out the best and the brightest and collaborating with the most innovative.
Like Nevada, Renown is a true original. In an emergency, ER care is easier at The Valley Health System hospitals. Each hospital’s ER wait time is prominently located on their hospital website. Patients can also view maps and get directons to each hospital. ER wait times posted online are the average wait for a patient to see a registered nurse during the triage process in the emergency department.
After patients are triaged, they are seen by qualified medical professionals in priority order, according to their medical condition and reason for visit. ER wait times are updated every 30 minutes, and represent the average waiting time, tracked over a four hour period. Times are approximate and provided for information purposes only.
The system also lets patients request a time to be seen in any emergency department thanks to a program called ER Reserve. From the hospital website, individuals can request a time to be seen for non life-threatening injuries or illnesses, such as sore throat, earache, coughs, a cold, muscle strains or sprains.
Patients can request a time up to 12 hours in advance and then wait for their requested time in the comfort of their own home. The ER Reserve system should only be used by patients whose care can wait several hours. Those in need of immediate care, are unsure of their condition or whose condition worsens should immediately go to the nearest emergency room or call 9-1-1.
At Anthem, we’re dedicated to improving the health of our fellow Nevadans
Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield has been a member of the Nevada community since 1969. Even though Anthem is one of the state’s largest insurers, we’re still as local as you can get. We understand your priorities — because we share them. We live and work in Nevada, and Anthem is dedicated to transforming the state’s health care with trusted and caring solutions. It’s our honor to support organizations that are there for Nevadans, now and for generations to come.
Access to Doctors and Hospitals
Our members have more than 6,500 doctors and specialists to choose from – and that’s a big deal. The doctor-patient relationship is central to good health, so we’ve developed programs that allow doctors to spend more time managing their patients’ overall care. We were first in the nation to improve primary-care reimbursement by paying doctors for advanced care coordination such as preparing care plans for those with complex health problems. The result is better care, better health and lower costs.
Member-friendly Tools
Anthem is committed to simplifying health care so our consumers can focus on health. With our website and mobile app, our members can find a doctor, check a claim, compare costs and even get a virtual ID card in seconds. Members can have virtual doctor visits, 24/7 on their computer or mobile device through LiveHealth Online. Benefit administrators can use our Client Reporting Tool and EmployerAccess website to allow them easy, efficient management of data entry, bill pay, claims and eligibility management.
Anthem Choice PPO
Anthem Choice PPO offers three different ways to get health care, all within the same plan. It works like this – when employees need care, they can choose a doctor from the Pathway PPO network, the traditional PPO network or they can use an out-of-network doctor. And, they can switch between these at any time — not just at open enrollment. Each choice has a different cost associated with it so your employees have the freedom to choose based on their needs each time they get care. Anthem Choice PPO is available for both Large Group and Small Group employers.
Home Means Nevada
Our employees are the backbone of Anthem’s Nevada plan, and we won’t let you down. Our team of local experts will guide you through all your plan options, offer one-call account servicing and even develop wellness solutions for your employee population.
