RENO – The heat in Nevada can mean only one thing, it’s summer. With weather this hot, it is important to focus on actions and activities that maintain a healthy lifestyle.
“SilverSummit Healthplan recognizes the importance of wellness and prevention, and many things are simple for people to do at home in order to stay healthy,” said Dr. Tanya Phares, Chief Medical Director of SilverSummit Healthplan.
Hydrate: During summer months, hydration is especially important. Make sure to hydrate with water and avoid sugar-sweetened beverages. Keep a bottle of water handy on your desk, in the refrigerator, or in the car. Try adding a slice of lemon or lime to improve the taste and increase your water intake.
Eat Fresh: Take advantage of the various farmers’ markets in Nevada. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables can reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke.
Stay safe in the sun: Avoid sun exposure during midday hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.). Wear sunscreen with at least SPF 15 when you go out in the sun. Make sure to reapply sunscreen every two hours when swimming since it can wear off. Wear sunglasses with UVA/UVB protection to protect your eyes and reduce the risk of cataracts. Wide brim hats can provide good protection from the sun as well.
Water safety: Water activities are popular during summer months. Children should always be supervised in and around water. It is important for children to learn how to swim and summer is a great time to enroll children in swimming lessons. Always wear a life jacket that is properly fitted when boating. Make sure home pools are fenced and not accessible to unsupervised children.
