Member-owned cooperative operating Electrical Vehicle Charging Station in Beatty
PAHRUMP –Valley Electric Association Inc. (VEA), a member-owned electric cooperative based in Pahrump, NV celebrated the newly operational Electric Vehicle Charging Station (EVCS) in Beatty with a ribbon cutting including Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval.
“By energizing this first charging station, Nevada is one step closer to our vision of connecting the urban centers in Clark and Washoe Counties and expanding our electric vehicle footprint into rural Nevada. By electrifying our highways, we’re creating an opportunity for more people to enjoy Nevada’s beautiful scenery, visit our vibrant communities, and explore the state’s many historic sites and gorgeous state parks. Nevada’s Electric Highway is an important step in our state’s pursuit to lead in emerging and innovative technologies,” said Brian Sandoval, Governor of Nevada.
VEA has two charging stations at the site, with three ports each. Two of the ports take approximately four hours for a full charge, while the third port will charge a vehicle to 80 percent capacity in 30 minutes. Currently VEA does not charge electric vehicle owners for using the station.
The EVCS is part of a planned 448-mile “Electric Highway” aimed at allowing drivers to travel the stretch along Highway 95 in short range electric vehicles. Stopping to charge their vehicles will also enable travelers to take time to explore the small towns, thus providing a boost to local economies.
“VEA is pleased to operate this EVCS. We worked closely with the Governor’s Office of Energy on this project and it’s good to see it come to fruition,” said Tom Husted, CEO of VEA. “It’s a part of our commitment to spur economic development and bring clean renewable energy to Nevada.”
In order to use VEA’s EVCS, drivers will need a free ChargePoint card. This card is common among electric vehicle charging stations throughout the U.S. To obtain a card, drivers should visit chargepoint.com for more information.
