Smith’s Food & Drug Stores is at it again.
On April 14, Smith’s will begin its fourth annual fundraising campaign to benefit the St. Rose Dominican Health Foundation Charity Care Program. Through May 17, Smith’s customers are invited to join store associates in fundraising efforts throughout Southern Nevada and Northern Arizona, including Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Henderson, Mesquite, Pahrump, Fort Mohave, Kingman, Lake Havasu and Bullhead.
Customers will be asked to make a donation at the check stands and in return be thanked with valuable coupons. Stores will have events to engage both associates and customers in fun and fundraising. In addition, any change dropped into the check stand coin boxes will be added to the effort.
“To date, Smith’s has donated $955,000 to support the children’s hospital. We believe in serving the communities in which we exist and this is one way we can reach out to those who need our support,” said Smith’s President, Jay Cummins. “This annual campaign is Smith’s small effort to show we appreciate the dedication of a hospital staff who serve the almost 40,000 children in Southern Nevada and Northern Arizona.”
Since the fundraising program’s 2011 inception, Smith’s Food & Drug Stores has made an effort to increase its annual giving efforts for St. Rose Dominican Hospitals. In that year, the grocer raised $130,000, followed by annual increases thereafter. In 2012, the total was $200,000, followed by $275,000 in 2013. In 2014, Smith’s presented St. Rose Dominican Health Foundation with a check for $350,000. The funds raised are a combination of efforts between associates, customers and Smith’s corporate gifts. The contributions are being used to assist families struggling to pay their child’s medical costs after trauma or serious illness.
Smith’s has a long history of supporting children’s hospitals. In the 1940’s, company founder Dee Smith collected pennies and delivered them to the nearby children’s hospital. Since 2002, Smith’s associates, suppliers and customers have contributed more than $10.8 million for children’s charity care throughout Smith’s seven western states of operation.
