RENO, NV – Parent education plays a critical part in helping families build and maintain healthy relationships with their children, promoting a better future for each child. The Children’s Cabinet is an excellent resource in Washoe County, offering parenting education workshops at no cost to families, in both English and Spanish. The Children’s Cabinet uses evidence-based curriculum in parent education classes, providing parents with responsible guidance techniques, effective communication skills and a general understanding of child development.
Parents who have taken classes at The Children’s Cabinet often share the successes they have had putting the techniques they learned to practical use. “It is rewarding to see each parent’s confidence grow, and see the difference it can make in each family’s life,” said Bette Katz, quality program manager.
One parent stated, “The instructor was excellent. I learned so much and cannot wait to go home and apply the skills I have learned.”
Marty Elquist, SEED (Supporting Early Education and Development) program director at The Children’s Cabinet explains why parent education is an important focus. “Research clearly shows that children’s early learning experiences and the relationships that children have with adults have a direct impact on their future success at school and in life.”
In addition to parenting education workshops, The Children’s Cabinet offers parent engagement activities throughout Nevada. These activities support parents and encourages them to be engaged in their child’s education starting at birth.
The Children’s Cabinet also offers early childhood education trainings for early education and care professionals throughout Nevada. Classes are offered in person at locations throughout Nevada, and online through live webinars and The Children’s Cabinet Child Care Aware Training Academy.
An Early Education Professional said, “The takeaway for me was getting the right tools to talk to parents. Roll play was very helpful and enjoyable too.”
