Girl Scout cookie sellers have always been entrepreneurs, developing skills in marketing, sales and accounting on the fly. Now a Las Vegas business leader is helping a local Girl Scout sharpen her business acumen and boost her cookie sales.
Max Pawn’s Michael Mack has been helping 14-year-old Jade Rowe of Girl Scout Troop 41, teaching her about customer service, sales techniques and business leadership.
He’s also offering the troop a chance to sell cookies at his stores.
Jade, who plays tennis when she’s not doing Girl Scout activities, has organizational skills she can apply to cookie sales. She organized a team for Light the Night, a walk sponsored by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, to earn her Girl Scout Silver Award.
“My dad died last year of leukemia and this was a special project that my Girl Scout troop and I took on in memory of my dad,” Jade says. “Our team had over 70 people and we were the number one fundraiser for the friends and family team.”
Jade and her mother, Jill, have a history of collaboration, having worked together for the National Charity League, a nonprofit involving mothers and daughters. Jade approached Mack last year to see if he’d serve as a business mentor.
“I did some research about Max Pawn and presented Mr. Mack some ideas how I thought Girl Scout cookies could help his business,” Jade said. “He agreed and decided to buy some cookies.” According to Jade, “He spent time and showed me how his business worked. I learned a lot from that.”
Mack’s niece, Tahoe Mack, is also a girl scout and a friend of Jade’s. Tahoe has been a part of Girl Scouts for eight years and said, “Girl Scouts has given me the opportunity to help out in the community.
It has taught me to set goals. I have experienced you can achieve anything as long as you are willing to work hard. Most importantly, I have made great friends, like Jade.”
According to Tahoe Mack’s mom, Dawn, Tahoe loves animals and has been an advocate against slaughter for domestic horses.
Tahoe’s hobbies include art and writing. She also loves business and has her own store on Etsy called Catchingyourdreamz, where she sells handmade dream catchers.
Michael Mack is helping the girls meet their goal to sell 1,000 boxes of Girl Scout cookies.
Michael Mack will give away a free box of Girl Scout cookies with every $25 purchase at the new Max Luxx in the Downtown Container Park and every $25 or higher purchase at the legacy Max Pawn store at 6040 W. Sahara Ave. from Feb. 9 through Valentine’s Day.
Each loan of $25 or more at Max Pawn will also qualify for complimentary cookies.
In addition, the Girl Scouts will sell cookies outside of Mack’s new Max Luxx Downtown Container Park store (opening next week) from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, February 11 and noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, February 14 and outside Max Pawn from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday February 13.
