More than $7,000 was raised to benefit local animal shelters and rescues at the annual Family, Fur & Fun Festival on Oct. 18, through a raffle, Halloween costume contest for pets, booth sponsorships, pet photography, and Hearts Alive Village sales and donations. The event was held at Exploration Park in the Mountain’s Edge master planned community.
Sponsored by the Las Vegas Hot Diggity Dachshund Club & Rescue, the Halloween contest raised more than $2,000. Winners included:
Best in Show: Ali Olsen’s Dachshund, Sofie, dressed as “Snifferella,” a Cinderella dog inside a carriage
Best Family: St. Marie family‘s Scottish Terriers, Bailey and Reggie, dressed as characters from the popular FX show, “Sons of Anarchy,” along with their costumed owners
Funniest Costume: Brooklyn Tanner’s Pug, Minah, dressed as a dinosaur.
Cutest Costume: Michael Steepin’s Terrier, Prince Albert, who paid homage to his namesake, dressed as a prince.
Several shelter and rescue animals were in attendance seeking their forever homes. Hearts Alive Village, a nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating homeless dogs and cats, brought animals and flyers for dogs that are up for adoption, resulting in two adoptions, one foster family, and one trial placement.
The free event was designed to raise awareness about the importance of adopting animals in shelters, fostering animals until they can be adopted, volunteering, and spaying and neutering.
A variety of booths and activities included cat and dog adoption areas, dog agility demonstrations, naming new shelter animals, free pet nail trimming, raffle prizes, pet Halloween contest, refreshments and more. The event also provided information to more than 500 kids and families about keeping pets healthy, incorporating them into the family, and including them in planning should a home fire or flood occur.
Family, Fur & Fun Festival sponsors included: Law Office of Donna Stidham LLC, Mountain’s Edge Master Planned Community, Aloha Animal Hospital, Amica Insurance, At Your Service Pet Supplies, English Garden Florist, NutriSource and the USA Sevens Rugby Team.
