Board of Directors selects Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance executive
Las Vegas — The Urban Chamber of Commerce announced a new partnership with the Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance.
As part of the Urban Chamber of Commerce’s efforts to strategically strengthen its role in the community, the board of the Urban Chamber has appointed Tom R. Skancke, CEO and president of the Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance, to the Board of Directors of the Urban Chamber of Commerce.
The Urban Chamber of Commerce’s strategic growth plan outlines the formation of new partnerships that will solidify the chamber’s relationships within the Las Vegas Valley’s business community. The Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance’s strategic plan has also highlighted the need for business groups in the Las Vegas Valley to be more effective through collaboration.
Ms. Jerrie E. Merritt, chair of the Urban Chamber Board of Directors, stated: “Tom Skancke will be a welcome addition to our Urban Chamber board. His appointment helps us meet several strategic objectives in terms of creating strategic alliances and making the Chamber a premier business organization within the state of Nevada.”
In 2011, as Nevada’s leaders reorganized economic development in the wake of the recession, the former Nevada Development Authority became the Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance and expanded its mission to help grow the Southern Nevada economy through connectivity, community development and aggressive business recruitment, retention and outreach. This mission dovetails with the Urban Chamber of Commerce’s reorganization several years ago that aimed to solidify the Chamber’s foundation and expand its partnerships to better achieve growth and development for members and associated businesses.
“We really see an alignment of our missions in this partnership,” Skancke said. “I’m thankful to the Urban Chamber for appointing me to the board of directors, and I think it’s a great symbol of how we can make positive change happen in our community when business and economic development organizations collaborate in partnership.”
The Urban Chamber of Commerce promotes ethnic diversity within its membership and Board of Directors as a universal approach toward promoting African American businesses in a global economy. Skancke’s appointment to the board was official September 16, 2014, when he attended his first Urban Chamber of Commerce board meeting.
