Learn about helping animals in need and proper pet care while enjoying the day with furry family members at the annual Family, Fur & Fun Festival on Saturday, Oct. 18 at Exploration Park at the Mountain’s Edge master planned community.
Now in its eighth year, the free event is 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is designed to raise awareness about the importance of adopting animals in shelters, fostering animals until they can be adopted, volunteering, and spaying and neutering.
A variety of booths and activities include cat and dog adoption areas, dog agility demonstrations, naming new shelter animals, free pet nail trimming, raffle prizes, pet Halloween contest, refreshments and more. The event also provides information to keep pets healthy, incorporate them into the family, and include them in planning should a home fire or flood occur.
Aloha Animal Hospital staff will provide information about proper pet care for all stages of life and answer questions. Topics cover spaying/neutering, vaccinations, heartworm and intestinal parasites, micro chipping, dental health, weight control, and general pet care including nutrition, supplements and dental products. NutriSource Pet Foods will cover proper pet nutrition and keeping pets from getting overweight.
In preparation for Halloween, pets of all shapes and sizes are invited to participate in a holiday costume contest. Categories include: Best in Show, Best Family (can include pet owners and/or multiple pets), Funniest Costume and Cutest Costume. The entry fee is $3 per category with registration at the festival. Organized by Las Vegas Hot Diggity Dachshund Club & Rescue, the costume contest will begin at 1:30 p.m. Information also will be shared to keep pets safe during the Halloween season.
Event proceeds from the costume contest and raffle will benefit local animal rescue and shelter programs.
A rugby clinic will be provided by the Las Vegas Rugby Academy, sponsored by USA Sevens Rugby which will be in Las Vegas in advance of its participation in the USA Sevens Rugby International event Feb. 13 to 15 at Sam Boyd Stadium.
