If you had an additional eight hours each day, what would you do with the extra time?
I’d spend it with my family. I know we’re talking about professional achievement, yet if I looked at my whole life, I’d have to say that what I am most proud of, it would be my children and wife.
Describe your leadership style.
I think in sports metaphors—I think of myself as a coach. I am fair, set high expectations but make an effort to lead by example—that’s a must for me. It comes from how I was raised—and from never forgetting where I started from. So I don’t say my employees work for me, they work with me. We’re a team.
What do you feel has been your biggest accomplishment?
I guess here at BNY Mellon it’s been the growth of our office. We’ve almost quadrupled our portfolio size since 2004. And our high client retention rate—even during the rough times this past year, we didn’t lose a single client. And, our office has been top in sales among all the BNY Mellon offices across the country.
What lesson do you feel has been invaluable to you in your business?
This may sound corny, but “Treat others as you would want to be treated.” Being fair and consistent and having a balance in life, which is easier said than done. Now that I live about 28 miles from the office, I am better at keeping a separation between my work and family life. Although my wife might sometimes disagree with that.
What values do you hope to pass on to your employees?
Hard work pays off. The hard work of our team has been recognized by BNY Mellon management and the employees know they’re appreciated. It also teaches them the importance of telling others when they are doing a good job.
What do you anticipate for the future of your industry?
I see tremendous growth here in Nevada, especially for a company like ours because investors today are much more focused on working with a strong, stable and ethical organization. And, with all the change in our economy and the aging of our population, people are going to need solid investment advice more than ever before.
