Describe your leadership style:
I believe in leading by example. I find that my employees are happier when, at crunch time, we all work side by side as a team to get the project done. The long hours are not an issue because we are having fun doing the work together. I am also a macro manager. I believe in giving my employees the confidence and freedom to express their creativity.
Biggest business challenge:
As most of my business is generated from word-of-mouth, my biggest challenge is building my brand. I’d like a wider reach.
Best business advice:
Take a few courses in business and money management. School teaches design concepts, but when you open your own business, usually money management is the cause of business failure.
Who inspired you to get into the business?
I think it was more an inherent part of my nature. I knew I was destined to a career in architecture and design from a very young age. I started at the age of 15, but along the way, I did have a few mentors who taught me how to be a good businessman and employer.
How do you retain your best and brightest employees?
I make sure they know how much they mean to the company’s success. I treat them with kindness and respect. As we work in a creative field, I allow them the freedom to express their creativity. I strongly believe in communication, both positive reinforcement and opportunities for growth. And finally, I reward them not only through compensation, but with company outings throughout the year, including trips to Disneyland.
