DOE Announces Plans to Ship Nuclear Waste to Yucca Mountain
The Department of Energy recently issued its official decision to ship nuclear waste along a railroad line it proposes to build from Caliente to Yucca Mountain. The department also formally confirmed it will open the rail line for business to ranchers and farmers when it is not in being utilized for nuclear waste.
Nevada Continues to Lead Nation in Foreclosures
Nevada continues to lead the nation with 77.8 pre-foreclosure (includes notices of default and auctions prior to foreclosure) filings for every 1,000 households, an increase of 115 percent from a year ago. Arizona is next with 74.6 filings, followed by Florida (64.2) and California (31.5). September saw 6,565 preforeclosures, compared to 5,360 in the previous month. The total through September stands at 49,364, already shattering last year’s total of 33,953.
Las Vegas Visitors Down 4.3%
The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority recently reported visitation numbers that showed nearly 3.2 million people visited Las Vegas in August, a 4.3 percent drop from the same month last year. It marked the sixth month this year that tourism has shown a decrease from 2007. Overall, visitor numbers are down 1.5 percent for 2008.
St. Rose Recognized
St. Rose Dominican Hospitals’ Palliative Care program has received the 2009 National Consensus Project Quality in Palliative Care Leadership Award. Only nine programs in the United States were selected for the prestigious award this year.
