Ely Fights to Keep Department Store
Officials from the city of Ely and White Pine County are “exploring their options” after the announcement on July 30 that J.C. Penney plans to close its Ely store, the last remaining department store in the Eastern Nevada town. The Texas-based department store chain had originally planned to close the local Penney this month, citing low profit margins, but agreed after meeting with local officials to keep it open until June 2004. Karen Rajala of the White Pine County Economic Diversification Council said the postponement will give Ely time to examine alternatives, which include exploring ways to make the local Penney more profitable, negotiating to bring another chain to town, and working together to establish a cooperative store. Meetings are also planned with state and federal officials to discuss which resources may be available to help the people of Ely in their efforts to keep a local department store.
