What is an RSS Feed?

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication, and it is a tool to bring the latest news to you. In a typical day you may surf onto 5 or 6 websites in order to get all of your daily news and information.

For instance, you may stop first at the New York Times, then head over to ESPN to get the sports headlines, before ending up at your favorite political blog.

Imagine if you could make a list of all of your "must visits" and have all of their headlines beamed directly to your email, or to one single website. RSS takes the surfing out of surfing the web.

A typical RSS feed will consist of a list of headlines with descriptions and direct links to their source. These automatically update themselves, so you are always right on top of the latest news.

To get started you will need an RSS reader. There are readers available for download online, many at no charge. Popular RSS readers include, NewsGator and Shrook for Mac users.

Once you download your reader, simply click on the orange XML button next to the RSS feed you would like to receive and copy the URL listed in the navigation bar. Paste this URL into the new subscription space that your reader asks for, and begin enjoying NBJ as a part of your daily news reading.
