Contact: Trish Ham

A course designed to teach law students how to be effective advocates before the Nevada legislature and the U.S. Congress is being introduced by the William S. Boyd School of Law in the spring session, with gaming law being the focal point, Dean John Valery White announced today. The name of the seminar is "Advanced Advocacy: Legislative Policy & Gaming Law."

Dean White said the seminar will be taught by Richard H. Bryan, former Nevada state legislator, attorney general, governor and U.S. Senator, and veteran gaming law attorney Bob Faiss, who was executive assistant to Nevada governor Grant Sawyer and a White House staff assistant and who has been a lobbyist for gaming industry clients in the past 17 sessions of the Nevada legislature. Both are members of the Gaming and Regulatory Law Department of the law firm of Lionel Sawyer & Collins.

"Legislatures have always been central to our system of government, whether at the Federal or State level," Dean White said. "This will be an unparalleled opportunity for our students to become well versed in the operation of Congress and the Nevada Legislature while gaining valuable experience in legislative advocacy."

Dean White noted the seminar is the fourth course in gaming law being offered by Boyd, which makes the school's gaming law program the most extensive among U.S. law schools.

The syllabus for the seminar shows that the students will learn about how legislatures operate and the proper role of attorney-lobbyists in that operation, will study examples of gaming law issues in the Congress and the Nevada legislature and will write and lobby on behalf of an amendment to the Nevada Gaming Control Act. Faculty advisor for the seminar is Prof. Steve Johnson.
