Window woes can be fixed
Have you ever replaced a window due to moisture or "sweating" between the panes? If you answered "yes" to this question you are not alone. Since the 1970's, dual-pane or "thermal" windows have become the standard for new construction and replacement windows. Internal moisture is usually caused by seal failure. Homeowners are often surprised to find their windows failing after just 10 years or less.
Once a window's seal has been compromised, it not only develops unsightly condensation, but it loses its thermal value as well, which defeats the purpose of the dual panes. Left untreated, you won't only pay more to heat and cool your home, but you may have to pay more to fix the problem too. For years the only solution to this common problem was to replace the glass or the whole window, which can be expensive, time consuming and intrusive.
A New Solution

Now there is a fast, effective, on-site process that can remove and prevent moisture without replacing the glass and at a fraction of the cost. Sound too good to be true? The unique process relies on the installation of a miniature air vent that allows the window to dry through evaporation. The process has been proven and tested for more than a decade and has been utilized to successfully restore over 100,000 windows in the US and Canada.
Established in September 2004, The Glass Guru, based in Roseville, CA was among the first to offer this service in the United States and has just opened up a new franchise location in Reno/Sparks which will service the entire Northern Nevada area.
How the Process Works
A Glass Guru Authorized Technician begins by drilling a small hole in an upper and lower corner of the failed window. Using specialized equipment and solutions, the interior space is cleaned after which transparent, patent-pending Micro-vents are installed over the drill holes. As the air temperature inside the window increases, the rising pressure expels any remaining moisture out the Micro-vents leaving the window dry and clear. This permanently restores the visibility and thermal qualities of the window as wet saturated air is replaced with a dry buffer of air between the panes. The cleaning and installation process usually takes about 20 minutes per window and most windows completely dry out within a month following service. The process is backed up by a transferable 10 year warranty.
It is recommended that homeowners do a close visual inspection of all their thermal pane windows at least twice a year to identify problematic windows at the earliest signs of failure. Any hint of vapor or condensation between the panes indicates seal failure. The earlier failed windows are treated, the higher the likelihood they can be fully restored to their original clarity. For windows with a high likelihood of failure (those with full sun exposure), the venting system can be also utilized as a preventative measure to avoid internal condensation before it starts.
Restoration vs. Replacement
The Glass Guru's Moisture Removal and Prevention service costs 50% less on average than the cost of installing quality replacement glass and can save even more compared to full window replacement. While replacement can take a week or more to order and install the glass, restoration usually takes less than 30 minutes per window. While the restoration service can be applied to most dual-pane windows, those with tempered glass or with severe staining usually require replacement. A free estimate is provided to determine which windows are restorable. In any case, The Glass Guru has you covered. As a full-service glass shop, they offer a wide variety of replacement options for windows, doors, mirrors and screens. They also offer professional scratch and hard water spot removal services for any glass surface.
