What inspired you to get into your industry?

I grew up in rural Texas where communities were literally dying as people moved to the cities for employment.  I became interested in how you attract and grow jobs in specific areas of the country and turn these communities around.

How do you encourage growth and development within your organization?

Be clear about stating the problem or opportunity and then trust the individual’s creative instincts.  When we have new initiatives, ask who wants the additional responsibility.

What is the biggest challenge economic development is facing?

The recession and high unemployment in Nevada.  It’s our job to find ways to improve job creation when money is tight and companies are not expanding.

If you could say one thing to the next generation, what would it be?

Be sovereign over your own life and take care of yourself and your family, work for yourself and control your own destiny.

What advice would you give to other executives moving into this market?

This is the West.  Don’t wait for the invitation to get involved, jump in where you want to make a difference.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

Be persistent.  The others will give up at some point, so just keep trying.

What do you anticipate for the future of business in Nevada?

We are coming out of this recession with a dedication to build a better economy for our state and do things differently.  Opportunities like renewable energy and bio-science will make us work to see and our opportunities more clearly.

What values do you hope to pass on to your employees?

The importance of trust where you know that I trust you and I know that you trust me.
