Department of energy abandoning Yucca Mountain plans
Internal Department of Energy budget documents obtained by a Washington, D.C., area trade publication show the department is abandoning its effort to license the planned Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository. "All license defense activities will be terminated in December 2009," according to the budget request cited by the publication, The Energy Daily. The Energy Department has submitted its plans to build the repository in Yucca Mountain, 100 miles northwest of Las Vegas, to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. It was expected to take three to four years to complete that review.
