Middle and high school-age kids have a different type of team sports activity to consider with rowing. The Lake Las Vegas Rowing Club is recruiting athletes, ages 13 to 18, for its Junior Rowing Team. No experience is required, and the first two weeks of this Olympic sport are free.
The first meeting for the Junior Rowing Team is Tuesday, Aug. 15, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Lake Las Vegas Rowing Club Boathouse, 15 Costa Di Lago in MonteLago Village in the Lake Las Vegas master planned community surrounding a 320-acre private lake.
According to Jim Andersen, Lake Las Vegas Rowing Club executive director, and head coach, the newest competitive sport in Nevada provides beneficial fitness, team-building, and collegiate opportunities. “Rowing is an injury-free, strength-building aerobic exercise; and great for learning to work with a team and accessing NCAA scholarships and PAC-12 and Ivy League school admissions,” said Andersen, who has coached multiple national championship teams with many of his former athletes competing on successful college teams and becoming Olympic athletes.
Athletes may practice up to six (6) days per week ‒ a minimum of three (3) days a week required ‒ Monday through Friday from 4 p.m.to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. “If interested students aren’t able to attend the Aug. 15 orientation meeting, we invite them to come to any practice to learn about the sport,” Andersen added.
The Junior Rowing Program is not affiliated with a particular high school. Boys and girls teams will compete against teams from other states. Following the first two free weeks, there is a monthly $120 fee.

In addition to the Junior Rowing Program, there are various adult programs from beginner to master levels.
The Lake Las Vegas community is just minutes from Galleria Parkway and I-515/U.S. 95 or off Lake Mead Parkway and Lake Las Vegas Parkway. Free parking is available in the Hilton Lake Las Vegas Resort & Spa parking garage adjacent to MonteLago Village.
