Nevada Rural Housing Authority makes affordable housing options possible for more Nevadans
Carson City – In a proclamation by Governor Brian Sandoval, June is Nevada Rural Housing Month in the state of Nevada, and the Nevada Rural Housing Authority (NRHA) is celebrating with a record-breaking number of mortgages through its Home At Last program, a groundbreaking event at Richards Crossing, a 39-unit apartment complex and life skills assistance program for veterans and homeless of Carson City, and other groundbreaking and grand opening events throughout rural Nevada.
NRHA has met the housing and economic development needs in the state of Nevada since 1973 by providing services such as home financing, rental support, multi-family housing development, and needs assessments of Nevada’s rural counties. Nevadans benefits year round from the programs offered through NRHA, which help build and sustain independent rural communities.
“Shelter is a basic need, and we are here help fulfill that. Simply put, we connect Nevadans to the homes that are right for them,” Gary Longaker, NRHA executive director, said. “Our mission is critical to not only improving the quality of life for Nevadans, but also to promoting development across the rural communities of our state. And we do it each and every day of the year.”
The number of mortgages NRHA has produced as part of The Home at Last program continues to grow, quarter over quarter. The program also is celebrating 10 years in operation, and is renowned as a national leader, implementing innovative access to credit solutions that allow low- to moderate-income families to experience homeownership, often for the first time.
In conjunction with key stakeholders including Friends In Service Helping (FISH), NRHA celebrated the groundbreaking on June 8 for Richards Crossing, a 39-unit apartment complex and life skills assistance program for veterans and homeless of Carson City. Upon completion in the spring of 2017, Richards Crossing will earmark 8 units specifically for chronically homeless veterans to provide ongoing shelter and support. An additional 31 units and life skills training will also be available for veterans, disabled and homeless persons in the community.
“The State of Nevada commends the Nevada Rural Housing Authority for its continued role in promoting housing support services and maintaining independent rural communities through its facilitation of programs that make affordable housing options possible for Nevadans in rural communities.” the Governor’s proclamation says.
