Local restaurant hosts Bites for Books and raises money for literacy efforts in the area
Reno – As part of the 2016 Nevada’s Big Give held on March 10, Great Basin Brewery went the extra mile in support of United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra through its Bites for Books event. The Brewery donated a portion of the evening’s dining sales in addition to hosting a raffle, helping United Way double its Big Give efforts from last year. United Way is proud to call Great Basin Brewery a partner and March’s United Way Winner.
Nevada’s Big Give is a day for donors to choose their favorite nonprofits to give to during a 24-hour period. During the Big Give, many partners such as Great Basin Brewery push beyond online giving and organize events. The Bites for Books event helped United Way’s goal of getting a book in the hands of a child – the event was also supported by generous partners who donated raffle prizes: Lone Eagle Grill, Renown Plastic Surgery, Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe, Atlantis Casino Resort Spa, Squeeze In, Lighthouse Coffee, Reno Academy of Combat, Scheels, Target and Aveda Salon.
“It’s not without partners like Great Basin Brewery and our raffle donors that we’re able to achieve our mission of increasing grade-level reading in northern Nevada,” Karen Barsell, UWNNS CEO, said. “This is what our community is all about, and with each United Way Winner we tout, it means more books, resources and tools to help kids learn to read so they can read to learn.”
The UWNNS programs and partnerships throughout the community are designed to help make the fourth grade and beyond a literacy-fueled journey for our children. Through a vibrant, multi-sector, region-wide effort to raise the bar for grade-level reading, UWNNS is engaging the community and providing increasing opportunities for volunteers and organizations to join projects that support early reading.
