Introduces interventional radiology in state; Performs many Nevada “firsts”
Dr. Paul Bandt has received the Healthcare Heroes Lifetime Achievement Award. The interventional radiologist at Desert Radiologists was recognized recently during a ceremony honoring individuals excelling in and advancing healthcare in Southern Nevada. The annual awards are presented by Nevada Business Magazine.
Moving to Las Vegas in 1972, Bandt became the catalyst for growth in the state for minimally invasive procedures that are safer and easier for patients to undergo, while ensuring better outcomes and recovery. He was the first radiologist in Nevada with any interventional training and was the first to locally perform these innovative medical advancements. Interventional radiology has proven to be very helpful in treating heart disease, tumors, osteoporosis, and many other diseases in which patients are not able to undergo surgery.
With a medical background in radiology and nuclear medicine, and an interventional subspecialty, and a position as radiation medical officer at the U.S. Public Health Service Hospital, Bandt was recruited to come to Las Vegas in the early 1970s and began working at Desert Radiologists in 1972, where he still practices. He established the Interventional Radiology Department at Desert Radiologists, which is now the largest diagnostic imaging center in the state and one of the country’s most successful private radiology practices. His work has helped the practice grow to 67 board-certified, subspecialty-trained radiologists, including 12 interventional radiologists.
Given his expertise and success, Bandt also has established the Interventional Radiology Departments at several hospitals and continues to hold, or has held, leadership roles with other local medical boards and organizations.
Celebrating the 10th anniversary of bestowing the awards, Nevada Business Magazine established Healthcare Heroes to honor individuals excelling in and advancing healthcare in the northern and southern parts of the state, and to help fund scholarships for future healthcare educators at the University of Nevada, Reno and University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Members of the state’s medical industry review all nominations. More than 200 people have been recognized and tens of thousands of dollars have been donated.
