The Children’s Specialty Center of Nevada, the state’s only nonprofit pediatric specialized outpatient treatment center, is proud to welcome Dr. Kanyalakshmi Ayyanar to the clinic. Dr. Ayyanar will bring a new level of expertise to patients affected by pediatric brain tumors.
Dr. Ayyanar was most recently Director of Pediatric Neuro-Oncology at the University of Louisville in Kentucky.
In addition to being board certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, Dr Ayyanar completed additional training to become a Pediatric Neuro-Oncologist. She will be the only full time physician based in Nevada who is trained in Pediatric Neuro-Oncology. Although Dr. Ayyanar will treat many different types of pediatric cancers, she will specialize in the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up care of brain tumor patients – both malignant and non-malignant. Brain tumors are the second most common type of cancer for pediatric patients.
“We are truly fortunate to have Dr. Ayyanar join our clinic,” said Annette Logan, President and Chief Executive Officer of Cure 4 The Kids Foundation. “Dr. Ayyanar’s experience and specialized knowledge in the area of diagnosis and treatment of brain tumors will be an incredible benefit to our current patients and those in the future.”
Historically, a large number of Nevada’s pediatric patients with brain tumors were sent out of state for specialized treatment. Dr. Ayyanar’s arrival brings a level of expertise to the community and the state that was not previously available.
“I am excited to be a part of The Children’s Specialty Center of Nevada,” said Dr. Kanyalakshmi Ayyanar. “With my expertise and experience, all of us at the Specialty Center hope to elevate the excellent care our patients receive by providing sub-specialty expertise and comprehensive care in the treatment of brain and spinal cord tumors”
Dr. Ayyanar was born and raised in India and received her medical degree from the Madurai Medical College, Dr. M.G.R. Medical University. She completed her residency and fellowships in the United States. She completed her Pediatric Hematology/Oncology fellowship at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York and her Pediatric Neuro-Oncology at Boston Children’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School. Dr. Ayyanar is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics (F.A.A.P.)
The Children’s Specialty Center of Nevada is a program of Cure 4 The Kids Foundation, founded in 2007 by Jonathan Bernstein, M.D. and Annette Logan.
Cure 4 The Kids Foundation is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization. Its mission is to provide funding and access to the latest medical treatments for those facing life-threatening diseases such as cancer, rare and ultra rare diseases, inherited bleeding disorders and rheumatological conditions. Dr. Jonathan Bernstein founded Cure 4 The Kids Foundation in 2007. Bernstein saw firsthand the difficulties faced by families whose children were affected by major diseases but didn’t have the financial resources or health insurance to receive treatment. Cure 4 The Kids Foundation was created with these families in mind. Cure 4 The Kids Foundation’s Charity Care Program ensures patients at the Children’s Specialty Center of Nevada and the Hemophilia Treatment Center of Nevada receive medical treatment regardless of family income or presence of health insurance. www.cure4thekids.org
