Yellow Checker Star and the Semper Fi Fund
Yellow Checker Star, a leading taxicab company in Las Vegas, will donate $5,000 on June 24 to the Semper Fi Fund, a national nonprofit that provides financial assistance and lifetime support for wounded, critically ill and injured members of the U.S. armed forces and their families across the U.S.
Yellow Checker Star strives to support important charitable resources in the communities it serves. This donation to the Semper Fi Fund contributes to essential financial assistance and additional services the nonprofit provides for military service men and women, veterans and their families across the U.S., including Nevada.
The donation also highlights a personal connection between Yellow Checker Star and the U.S. military. Joel Willden, company field operations manager and grandson of company co-founder Dave Willden, has sustained a lifelong friendship with Nevada native Sgt. Thomas “Trey” Humphrey. Serving overseas with the Marines, Humphrey lost a leg three years ago in Afghanistan.
Yellow Checker Star honored Humphrey’s service by donating a renovated van to him upon his return home from overseas. Humphrey in turn donated the van to another wounded service man a year later. Yellow Checker Star seeks to continue this pattern of military support through the donation to the Sempfer Fi Fund, which Humphrey will accept on the nonprofit’s behalf.
The Semper Fi Fund has donated more than $90 million to more than 11,500 military service members since it was founded in 2004. It also provides support through efforts including Adaptive Transportation, Specialized Equipment, Education and Career Training and Rehabilitative Sports programs.
