Las Vegas, NV –We at Lionel Sawyer & Collins are deeply saddened by the passing of Bob Faiss, chairman emeritus of the Firm’s Gaming & Regulatory Law Department. For over 40 years, he has been our mentor, leader and friend.
For more than a half century, Bob played a key role in the evolution of the Nevada gaming industry, starting as a member of Governor Grant Sawyer’s administration which established the current gaming regulatory structure (including the Nevada Gaming Commission and Control Board). His extraordinary career included a stint as the youngest city editor in the country at the Las Vegas Sun, as well as serving as a member of President Lyndon Johnson’s White House staff. Returning to Nevada with his law degree, Bob began his legal career at Lionel Sawyer & Collins, before there was a recognized gaming law practice specialty. Over the years, Bob became the preeminent gaming lawyer. Bob’s unique ability to work with Nevada legislators and government regulators on behalf of his major gaming clients enabled him to draft much of the current legislation and regulations that govern the industry. He earned a reputation throughout the world as the foremost gaming lawyer and was frequently an adviser to nations and states on gaming regulations. He was acclaimed by the National Law Journal as one of the 100 Most Influential Lawyers in America.
Most importantly, everyone who knew Bob was well acquainted with his kindness and generosity of spirit, as well as his unwavering dedication to Nevada and the community. Bob’s most recent honors included being named “Distinguished Nevadan” by the Nevada System of Higher Education and, along with his accomplished and devoted wife, Linda, receiving this year’s award by the Boulder City Hospital. His legacy will continue to inspire gaming attorneys and those who work in the gaming industry and associations, the law students that he so graciously instructed at the Boyd School, those who read his publications, the citizens of Nevada and all of us at Lionel Sawyer & Collins.
