LAS VEGAS –The PENTA Building Group announced it has completed its $43 million expansion of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America International Training Center, located at 6801 Placid St. in Las Vegas.
The new 220,000-square-foot addition to the facility will be utilized to provide a wide variety of training resources for members of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters (UBC). In addition to shop space, the training center expansion contains more than 30 classrooms, two large meeting halls that can be joined or divided for various events, and a display area and museum. The entire structure, including the adjoining existing space, is approximately 365,000 square feet.
The training center campus, which can house several hundred individuals, includes state-of-the-art infrastructure to provide in-depth training to regional instructors as well as for union members in the U.S. and Canada. The new “South Shop” facility includes an 80,000-square-foot shop space for hands-on learning opportunities, including an expansive area for scaffolding construction and a 30-by-60-foot retractable roof. The UBC campus also offers training on interior systems, gas and steam turbine installation and maintenance, and other forms of commercial and industrial construction.
Work on the facility’s expansion project began in September 2012. Approximately 200 workers were involved with the project during the peak of construction. Many members of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters contributed to this project, utilizing the training and skills developed by the Carpenters International Training Fund. The initial phase of the training center opened in 2001, with this newest and largest expansion completed in September 2013. An opening ceremony is slated for early 2014.
“This training center is a testament to the commitment of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters to train the most capable, qualified workforce in the world,” said Curt Carlsen, project manager for The PENTA Building Group. “As a contractor that often relies on the versatile skills of carpenters, PENTA is proud to provide such a cutting-edge facility to support the training of hard-working professionals for generations to come.”
The United Brotherhood of Carpenters includes almost 500,000 members and includes more than 200 training centers across North America with 2,500 full-time instructors.
