(Las Vegas) – Vegas PBS will host its fourth annual 5K Run & 1 Mile Walk to benefit Keeping Kids Fit, an educational outreach program targeting childhood obesity. The event will kick-off at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 16 at the Vegas PBS building, 3050 E. Flamingo Road.
PBS’ new star Daniel Tiger from Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood will be on hand at the event to welcome the children and for photo ops. Highlights include fitness games and prizes, a social media booth, a high energy DJ spinning Top 40 favorites, health information booths, healthy refreshments, and 5K race awards.
While the fight against childhood obesity is beginning to show improvement across the country, it still remains a critical issue here at home. According to a recent study released by The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, the obesity rate among low-income preschoolers declined by small but statistically significant amounts in 19 states and U.S. Territories between 2008 and 2011 – unfortunately Nevada was not among the states showing improvement.
“Heading into our fourth year, we are looking to make this race our biggest yet,” said event organizer and Vegas PBS Ready To Learn Coordinator Jessica Carroll. “There is still much work that needs to be done here in Nevada to tackle the childhood obesity rate and push the message that physical fitness and healthy eating is a family affair.”
Registration fees are $25 per person until Nov. 8, and $35 from Nov. 9 thru Nov. 14. Race day and packet pick-up day admission fees will be $40. Interested participants can register online and get more information at www.VegasPBS.org/KKF5K, call Vegas PBS at 702.799.1010, sign up in person at the Vegas PBS building, or go to the event’s Facebook Page at www.Facebook.com/VegasPBS. Packets may be picked up on Friday, Nov. 15 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Vegas PBS.
One hundred percent of the proceeds from the 5K Run & 1 Mile Walk will benefit Vegas PBS Keeping Kids Fit, a long-term program that addresses childhood obesity. To date, more than 65,000 children, parents, caregivers and teachers have participated in more than 652 exercise and nutrition workshops hosted by Vegas PBS. The website to date has generated more than 57,000 views.
